"Le 6 avril 1770, dix-sept écrivains parmi les plus célèbres représentants du siècle des Lumières se réunissent dans le salon très parisien de Mme Necker pour rendre hommage à Voltaire. Une souscription en direction des " gens de lettres ", amis et admirateurs du philosophe, est lancée afin de lui ériger une statue en marbre. Les souscripteurs dont les noms sont dévoilés pour la première fois dans cet ouvrage sont rapidement nombreux. Voltaire, d'abord réservé, comprend la portée symbolique de l'entreprise et accepte de servir de " prête-nom " contre le fanatisme et la persécution. D'Alembert lui écrit: " Vous recevrez Pigalle, le plus célèbre de nos artistes, comme Virgile aurait reçu Phidias. " Jean-Baptiste Pigalle se rend à Ferney pour modeler la tête de Voltaire, puis exécute dans son atelier le corps nu et décharné d'un vieillard. Au-delà des critiques railleuses qui vont chercher à attaquer Voltaire en prenant prétexte de la statue, cette nudité, défendue par Pigalle et Diderot, va susciter un débat passionné." P.
