Yvonne Rainer : the mind is a muscle by Catherine Wood( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1968, toward the end of a decade that witnessed civil rights protests, the escalation of the war in Vietnam and an expanded notion of artistic practice, Yvonne Rainer presented her evening length work, The Mind is a Muscle, a multipart performance for seven dancers interspersed with film and text. Catherine Wood examines the political and media context in which Rainer chose to use the dance theatre situation and analyses her radical approach to image making in live form. For Wood, The Mind is a Muscle proposed a new model of artwork that presents a dynamic tension between materiality and idea. It made manifest an agitated and contradictory relationship to the idea of 'work' in the context of affluent America, and stripped away the gestural conventions of dance or theatre narrative in an attempt to formulate new kinds of 'social scripts' while manipulating the seductiveness of the image, increasingly being harnessed by capitalism."--book jacket

"[This film] tells the riveting story of one of America's most important artists. In 1962, as a founding member of Judson Dance Theater, Rainer, revolutionized modern dance by introducing everyday movements like walking and running into the dance lexicon. Abandoning choreography in the '70s, Rainer introduced narrative techniques into American avant-garde film, turning that genre on its head, too. [W]e follow Rainer, returned to choreography, as she continues to create vibrant, courageous, unpredictable dances that invite audiences to question basic assumptions about art and performance"-- Container

3 editions published between 2000 and 2005 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Prompted by experience as an expatriate American artist in (West) Berlin, Journeys from Berlin is a curiously prescient, relevant film on the nature and psychology of violence, isolation, trauma, and repression. The sounds of an urban couple's the off-screen conversations are juxtaposed against a scrolling text describing the political climate of 1960s Cold War era (West) Germany, as the government scrambled to contain the threat posed by a domestic terrorist group, the Baader-Meinhof gang (Red Army Faction). The film is a multi-layered reflection of seeming irresolvable, contradictory synchronicity - of dichotomous collisions between image and sound, words and sentiment, time and memory, ideology and action
