Iraq : the day after( Book )

16 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With mounting costs to American lives and treasure in Iraq, and success there so clearly tied to American staying power and the coherence of U.S. strategy, the Bush administration must sharpen and deepen its commitment to making Iraq a better and safer place. As a first step, the authors argue that the president should set the direction for his administration by making a major foreign policy address to the nation, explaining the importance of seeing the task through, as well as the costs and risks of U.S. engagement in postwar Iraq. Written as a "Chair?s Update" to the Task Force's report in March, Iraq: the day after, this report argues that the absence of a clear vision and strategy to shape Iraq's political landscape has undermined progress in the postwar transition and rebuilding effort, and created uncertainty among Iraqis. In addition, although there is broad public support in many regions for the coalition presence, hostility toward the United States in parts of Iraq threatens to undermine U.S. objectives. The Bush administration should therefore reaffirm its commitment to sustain a large presence of U.S. military forces to ensure stability as long as necessary, even as U.S. officials seek to recruit military forces from other capable states. It should also improve management and operations in the oil industry; share the burden with international partners; and prepare for the next peace stabilization and reconstruction challenge after Iraq
National security consequences of U.S. oil dependency : report of an independent task force( Book )

7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The lack of sustained attention to energy issues is undercutting U.S. foreign policy and U.S. national security. Major energy suppliers - from Russia to Iran to Venezuela - have been increasingly able and willing to use their energy resources to pursue their strategic and political objectives. Major energy consumers - notably the United States, but other countries as well - are finding that their growing dependence on imported energy increases their strategic vulnerability and constrains their ability to pursue a broad range of foreign policy and national security objectives. Dependence also puts the United States into increasing competition with other importing countries, notably with today's rapidly growing emerging economies of China and India. At best, these trends will challenge U.S. foreign policy; at worst, they will seriously strain relations between the United States and these countries
