T. Addison Richards letters received by T. Addison Richards( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The collection consists of 69 letters to Richards plus one from George H. Smillie, treasurer of the American Water Color Society, to Mr. E.D.E. Greene, treasurer of the National Academy of Design, enclosing $100 to benefit the Academy's schools. The majority of the letters to Richards concern exhibitions held at the National Academy of Design. Most are brief but on the whole they provide a picture of virtually every aspect of the practical side of mounting an art exhibition in the nineteenth century, from the selection of artworks and the paperwork involved, the delivery and installation of the entries to be shown, the receptions held, the sale of pieces on display, to the eventual return of the pictures or sculpture loaned by the participants
