Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz by John Gray McKendrick( Book )

33 editions published between 1899 and 2012 in English and German and held by 440 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This work is a record of the achievements in scientific discovery and invention of one of the greatest minds of the nineteenth century. Hermann Helmholtz was one whose private life was known only to a few, and he would have instinctively recoiled from biographical revelations of a purely personal character. At the same time, I have endeavoured to give the reader some idea of the man--calm, placid, reserved, thoughtful--whose love of truth, yearning spirit of inquiry, and great intellectual powers give him a place in the front ranks of the interpreters of Nature. A life full of intellectual activity, creative, ever productive, could not contain much in the way of trivial incident. I have also tried, by following a historical method, to trace the history of any branch of inquiry up to the point when it came under the survey of Helmholtz, and then I have given an account of the contributions made by himself. Few are able to tread in the footsteps of Helmholtz, even although these are carefully pointed out by a competent guide; but this volume may at all events give an outline of the paths along which he trod"--Preface. The physiology of the senses by John Gray McKendrick( )

28 editions published between 1893 and 2012 in English and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is the aim of this book to give a succinct account of the functions of the organs of sense as these are found in man and the higher animals. The Authors have refrained from discussing with fulness of detail either the comparative physiology of the senses or the numerous interesting questions of a psychological character that inevitably arise in connection with the study of the mechanism of sensory perceptions. Each of these aspects of the subject would require a volume for itself. On the other hand, a perusal of this volume, which has been written so as to be readily understood even by those who have not made physiology a special subject of study, will be a suitable preparation for entering upon the more recondite questions that underlie physiological psychology. The Authors have endeavoured to treat the physiology of the senses as fully as space would allow, and have also suggested comparatively simple experiments by which any one interested in the subject may test some of the statements for himself. They would also direct attention to the last chapter, in which an attempt is made to elucidate the nature of the physiological basis of sensation, in the hope that it may be found to be a contribution to speculative thought on this problem"--Preface.
