Animal rights/human rights : entanglements of oppression and liberation by David Alan Nibert( Book )

8 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 348 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This accessible and cutting-edge work offers a new look at the history of western 'civilization, ' one that brings into focus the interrelated suffering of oppressed humans and other animals. Nibert argues that the oppression both of humans and of other species of animals is inextricably tangled within the structure of social arrangements. Nibert asserts that human use and mistreatment of other animals are not natural and do little to further the human condition
Animal oppression and human violence : domesecration, capitalism, and global conflict by David Alan Nibert( Book )

7 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jared Diamond and other leading scholars have argued that the domestication of animals for food, labor, and tools of war has advanced the development of human society. But by comparing practices of animal exploitation for food and resources in different societies over time, David Nibert reaches a strikingly different conclusion. He finds in the domestication of animals, which he renames?domesecration," a perversion of human ethics, the development of large-scale acts of violence, disastrous patterns of destruction, and growth-curbing epidemics of infectious disease. Nibert centers his study on
White flight from Columbus public school desegregation by David Alan Nibert( )

3 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mandatory busing to achieve public school desegregation has been suspected of causing resegregation due to decreasing white student enrollment. Most research of student enrollment trends have been demographic. Few studies have examined the attitudes and perceptions of parents who are confronted with the desegregation of their community's schools. This study examines the attitudes of 150 parents who faced mandatory public school desegregation in Columbus, Ohio. Answers were sought to the following questions: (1) What role did desegregation play in the decision of some parents to withdraw their children from the system? (2) To the extent that desegregation was a factor, what aspect of the policy did parents object to most; and (3) What other factors distinguish parents who left the school system from those parents who did not? Assistance was obtained from the Columbus Public School System and interviews were conducted with three groups of parents; parents who moved, parents who transferred their child to a private school, and parents who did not withdraw their child from the public school system. Results indicated that the vast majority of all the interviewed parents opposed mandatory busing of students. Additionally, most of the parents interviewed would have faced similiar conditions imposed by the policy. The one policy consequence that distinguished between parents who left and parents who stayed was whether or not their child would have been bused. Parents whose children were to be bused were more likely to withdraw their child from the system. Few attitudinal variables emerged which distinguished between the groups. Parents who moved were different from parents who transferred their child to a private school in that the latter were more likely to be Catholic, homeowners, and older. Movers were more likely to rent their housing and they were younger. These findings suggest that demographic and situational variables may have more influence over parental behavior than their attitudes. Additionally it was found that, of the parents who left the system, less than half stated desegregation was the principle reason for their move. On the basis of this research it is suggested that caution be exercised before desegregation is viewed as motivating most white student withdrawal from public schools
