Records, 1783-1793, containing receipts, bills, contracts, and correspondence, much of it in French. The Scioto Land Company, formed by William Duer and his associates at the time of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, aimed to buy land on the Ohio and Scioto rivers, and settle it with emigrants from France. The Scioto land Company never purchased any land, but began selling lots to would-be settlers from France; the Ohio Company, formed with similar aims and directed by Manasseh Cutler of Boston, was more successful. Some of the material in this collection pertains to the activities of the Ohio Company. The collection includes accounts and returns of supplies for the emigrants, as well as a number of inventories of property brought from France, made by emigrants who had lost their effects when the ship Recovery sank. The correspondence includes numerous letters to William Duer, and a number of letters to Brissot de Warville, including some personal and family letters, and a series of letters from Joshua Gilpin, discussing the import of skilled paper makers and paper making equipment from France. There are a number of letters from Joel Barlow, the company's agant in Europe, and letters from numerous other correspondents, including Miers Fisher, discussing the company's finances and prospects, as well as the difficulties of the emigrants at Marietta and Gallipolis
