Selfdual partial differential systems and their variational principles
by N Ghoussoub
(
)
20 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Based on recent research by the author and his graduate students, this text describes novel variational formulations and resolutions of a large class of partial differential equations and evolutions, many of which are not amenable to the methods of the classical calculus of variations. While it contains many new results, the general and unifying framework of the approach, its versatility in solving a disparate set of equations, and its reliance on basic functional analytic principles, makes it suitable for an intermediate level graduate course. The applications, however, require a fair knowledge of classical analysis and PDEs which is needed to make judicious choices of function spaces where the selfdual variational principles need to be applied. It is the author's hope that this material will become standard for all graduate students interested in convexity methods for PDEs. Nassif Ghoussoub is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of British Columbia. He was editorinchief of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics for the period 19932003, and has served on the editorial board of various international journals. He is the founding director of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), and a cofounder of the MITACS Network of Centres of Excellence. He is also the founder and scientific director of the Banff International Research Station (BIRS). He is the recipient of many awards, including the CoxeterJames, and the JeffreyWilliams prizes. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1993, and was the recipient of a Doctorat Honoris Causa from the Universite ParisDauphine in 2004

Functional inequalities : new perspectives and new applications
by N Ghoussoub
(
Book
)
5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide "The book describes how functional inequalities are often manifestations of natural mathematical structures and physical phenomena, and how a few general principles validate large classes of analytic/geometric inequalities, old and new. This point of view leads to "systematic" approaches for proving the most basic inequalities, but also for improving them, and for devising new onessometimes at will and often on demand. These general principles also offer novel ways for estimating best constants and for deciding whether these are attained in appropriate function spaces. As such, improvements of Hardy and HardyRellich type inequalities involving radially symmetric weights are variational manifestations of Sturm's theory on the oscillatory behavior of certain ordinary differential equations. On the other hand, most geometric inequalities, including those of Sobolev and LogSobolev type, are simply expressions of the convexity of certain free energy functionals along the geodesics on the Wasserstein manifold of probability measures equipped with the optimal mass transport metric. CaffarelliKohnNirenberg and HardyRellichSobolev type inequalities are then obtained by interpolating the above two classes of inequalities via the classical ones of Hölder. The subtle MoserOnofriAubin inequalities on the twodimensional sphere are connected to Liouville type theorems for planar mean field equations."Publisher's website
Mathematical analysis of partial differential equations modeling electrostatic MEMS
by Pierpaolo Esposito
(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide "Micro and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS), which combine electronics with miniaturesize mechanical devices, are essential components of modern technology. It is the mathematical model describing 'electrostatically actuated' MEMS that is addressed in this monograph. Even the simplified models that the authors deal with still lead to very interesting second and fourthorder nonlinear elliptic equations (in the stationary case) and to nonlinear parabolic equations (in the dynamic case). While nonlinear eigenvalue problems where the stationary MEMS models fit are a welldeveloped field of PDEs, the type of inverse square nonlinearity that appears here helps shed a new light on the class of singular supercritical problems and their specific challenges. Besides the practical considerations, the model is a rich source of interesting mathematical phenomena. Numerics, formal asymptotic analysis, and ODE methods give lots of information and point to many conjectures. However, even in the simplest idealized versions of electrostatic MEMS, one essentially needs the full available arsenal of modern PDE techniques to do the required rigorous mathematical analysis, which is the main objective of this volume. This monograph could therefore be used as an advanced graduate text for a motivational introduction to many recent methods of nonlinear analysis and PDEs through the analysis of a set of equations that have enormous practical significance."Publisher's description
