Made in California : art, image, and identity, 1900-2000 by Stephanie Barron( Book )

14 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 866 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The volume is divided into five twenty-year sections, each including a narrative essay discussing the history of that era and highlighting topics particularly relevant to its visual culture. Two overarching themes emerge that have been crucial for how we imagine and understand California: first, the landscape, including both the natural and built environment, and second, the multifaceted relationships California has had with Latin America and Asia. Geographer Michael Dear has contributed a sweeping overview of the social history of California that examines the vibrant and sometimes turbulent conditions out of which the culture emerged. Essayist Richard Rodriguez closes the volume with a uniquely personal meditation on the Golden State

In wonderland : the surrealist adventures of women artists in Mexico and the United States by Ilene Susan Fort( Book )

13 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 539 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Filled with a wide array of illustrations, this book offers a fresh perspective on surrealism as it spotlights the important role that North American women artists played in the movement. The surrealist movement in art is most often identified with male artists, many of whom objectified women in their paintings, casting them as sexual or symbolic ideals. Conversely, the female artists of the movement delved primarily into their own subconscious and dreams. This volume features the work of 48 Mexican and U.S.-based women artists whose contributions to the surrealist movement span more than four decades and whose work was both influential and radical in its own right. Thematically arranged, it includes more than 250 full-color images along with several essays exploring the effects of geography and gender on the movement. This unique book illustrates surrealism as a gateway to self-discovery, especially in North America, where women artists were freed from oppressive European traditions and the vagaries of war. From 1931, the year of Lee Miller's first surreal photograph, to 1968, when Yayoi Kusama presented her landmark happening "Alice in Wonderland" in New York's Central Park, the artists and works depicted here are both significant and extraordinary in their explorations of personal and universal truths"--

"American painter Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) lived in Europe from 1913 to 1915. After spending some time in Paris and Munich he moved to Berlin, where he painted his most impressive works. Hartley was associated with Herwarth Walden's Sturm gallery and participated in its 'First German Autumn Salon' in 1913, which featured numerous international artists. Immediately prior to and after his Berlin years, Hartley cultivated a style of painting that was moderately figurative, however the years 1913 to 1915 marked an apogee of abstraction in his career. During these years he developed a completely independent vernacular, which placed him at the forefront of the avant-garde of the time. His paintings from this period literally explode off the canvas, they are composed of bright, starkly contrasting colours that directly border one another. The theme around which these works revolve is the First World War. Flags, military standards and insignia such as the Iron Cross form recurring motifs in the paintings. Hartley's relationship with the Prussian Officer Karl von Freybourg, who died just months after the outbreak of war, led to Hartley producing such masterworks as 'Portrait of a German Officer' (1914, Metropolitan Museum, New York), in which abstract forms and military paraphanalia are so densely interwoven that the resulting portrait is composed purely of symbols."--Staatliche Museen zu Berlin website, viewed June 5, 2014

Calder and abstraction : from avant-garde to iconic by Stephanie Barron( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Alexander Calder's most beloved creations--from his mobiles to his public sculpture--are examined from every angle in this stunning book. Widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Alexander Calder revolutionized modern sculpture--most significantly with his kinetic works, for which Marcel Duchamp coined the term "mobiles." Later in his career, Calder created enormous versions of these floating abstractions. Their arching forms, dynamic surfaces, and sheer mass reflected his fascination with engineering and technology. This book focuses on Calder's earlier, interior-scaled works, which paved the way for the public works that continue to fascinate viewers around the world. Filled with images of Calder's elegant, colorful, floating shapes, this volume offers a number of critical texts that enrich our understanding of this innovative artist. Together with an illustrated exhibition chronology and bibliography, this in-depth and highly engaging volume offers something for every fan of Calder's work"--
