Benito Pérez Gáldos (Las Palmas, 1843-Madrid, 1920). España. Nació el 10 de mayo de 1843, y era el menor de los diez hijos de Sebastián Pérez Macías, teniente coronel del Ejército, y María Dolores Galdós Medina. Gáldos estudió en el colegio de San Agustín, y mostró interés por la música y la pintura. En 1861 escribió sus primeros textos, y al año siguiente se fue a Madrid para estudiar derecho. Allí colaboró con La Nación y la Revista del Movimiento Intelectual de Europa. Tras sus viajes a París, en 1867 y 1868, Galdós profundizó en la obra de Balzac, y tradujo a Dickens. En 1870, escribió sus primeras novelas y publicó en La Revista de España, en la cual aparecieron después, por entregas, novelas suyas. En 1888, tras ser rechazada su segunda candidatura para la Academia, Galdós fue aceptado. Y en 1906 murió Lorenza Cobián, con quien Galdós había tenido una hija, María. Muy politizado, Galdós ingresó en el partido republicano, fue elegido diputado por Madrid y publicó España trágica en el folletín de El País. Aunque es uno de los pocos literatos españoles que vivió de la escritura, la inactividad de los últimos años le trajo problemas económicos, por lo que, y pese a la ceguera incipiente, no dejó de escribir. Galdós murió, en Madrid, el 4 de enero de 1920
