"Although not the official national anthem, "America" may be the most storied patriotic song in the national repertoire. Popularly known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee"--And as "God Save the King/Queen" before that - this tune has a history as rich as the country it extols." "Sweet Freedom's Song: "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and Democracy in America explores and celebrates the complicated musical, cultural, and political roles played by the song over the past 250 years, chronicling many incarnations over the centuries."--Jacket
Debate and critical analysis : the harmony of conflict by Robert J Branham( Book )

9 editions published between 1991 and 2013 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rather than approach debate primarily as a form of interscholastic competition, this unique book identifies it as an activity that occurs in many settings: scientific conferences, newspaper op-ed pages, classrooms, courts of law, and everyday domestic life. Debate is discussed as an integral part of academic inquiry in all disciplines. As in all fields of study, various competing views are advanced and supported; Debate and Critical Analysis is designed to better prepare the student to assess and engage them. This text posits four characteristics of true debate--argument development, clash, extension, and perspective--which form the basic structure of the book. Each concept or aspect of argument covered is illustrated by an example drawn from contemporary or historical sources, allowing the reader to actually see the techniques and strategies at work. All popular forms of competitive debate, including "policy," "Lincoln-Douglas," "value-oriented," and "parliamentary," are discussed in detail--as embedded in the actual topical controversies with which they are concerned. In this way, the student can learn the structures, reasoning processes, and strategies that may be employed, as well as the practical affairs of debating, from brief-writing to the flowsheet." --Publisher description

The Ineffable: An Examination of the Limits of Expressibility and theMeans of Communication by W. Barnett Pearce( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recurrent claims of ineffable experience and their importance for communication theory are analyzed in this paper. Four positions are identified: (1) the "complete effability/complete communicability" position is historically identified with Western culture but repudiated by modern thought; (2) the "complete ineffability/complete communicability" position has some adherents but is self-defeating; (3) the "complete effability/limited communicability" position provides the conceptual base for most of the work in twentieth-century communication theory; and (4) the "complete ineffability/limited communicability" position has consistent support but requires a new form of theory which differentiates "coordination" and "consubstantiation" as genres. The paper points out that explication of the features of situations which prompt recognition of ineffability and the characteristics of individual and cultural attempts to express the ineffable necessitate a reanalysis of the function of several social institutions, and that this analysis suggests new directions for the development of communication theory.
