Herbert findet Freunde - Anemone, Seestern, Schnecke, Seeigel und Lampenfisch -, die sein Haus schmücken und ihn schützen. Doch Herbert wächst weiter, auch sein neues Haus wird ihm eines Tages zu klein. Er muss es verlassen, sich von seinen Freunden trennen. In dieser Geschichte vermittelt Eric Carle eine tiefe menschliche Grunderfahrung: er zeigt, wie man mit Problemen der Trennung und den Schwierigkeiten eines Neuanfangs fertig wird und mit Hilfe von Freunden die neue Situation bewältigen kann.
