Der Schiffsarzt Lemuel Gulliver schildert seine Erlebnisse auf vier Reisen Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts. Auf diesen Reisen machte er zunächst auf der Insel Liliput die Bekanntschaft der winzigen Einwohner, den Liliputanern. Diesen kann er unter anderem dadurch behilflich sein, dass er eine Feuersbrunst durch einfaches Pinkeln zum Erlöschen bringt. Die Insel Liliput liegt, durch einen breiten Kanal getrennt, neben der Insel Blefuscu. Die Inseln sollen irgendwo im Südpazifik liegen. Sie liegen seit Jahren in einem sinnlosen Krieg, ausgelöst wegen der Frage, wie ein gekochtes Ei richtig aufzuschlagen sei, am Kopf oder am dicken Ende. Die Liliputaner vertreten die Meinung, es sei am Kopf aufzuschlagen, die Blefuscaner die, dass man es am Ende aufschlagen sollte
