Liszt : a chorus of voices : essays, interviews, and reminiscences( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"2011, the current 'Liszt year, ' marks the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt's birth. In celebration, Pendragon announces Liszt: A Chorus of Voices. Although it contains the results of scholarly research and the opinions of more than a few academics, this volume is not a musicological monograph. Nor is it a tell-all gossip book. Instead, it presents personal as well as professional information about its contributors, their lives and experiences, and the books, articles, performances, recordings, and other products they have created along Lisztian lines. Counting places of birth as well as citizenship and current residence, the contributors to Liszt: A Chorus of Voices come from or currently live in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. These men and women are collectors, composers, choral and orchestral conductors, film directors and producers, journalists, librarians, musicologists, organists, periodical editors, pianists, and university administrators; a few of them also represent extra-musical fields, including art history, cultural studies, and English literature. Each of them has something distinctive to say not only about Liszt, but about him- or herself. Musical examples and other illustrations, as well as photographs of all contributors, provide additional information as well as diversion
Liszt's legacies : based on papers presented at the International Liszt Conference held at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, 28-31 July 2011( Book )

5 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Franz Liszt has long been written about from the perspectives of his own life, relationships, and accomplishments, especially as composer and performer. What, however, of his complex legacy? Liszt influenced many of his contemporaries as well as subsequent generations of musicians, critics, and scholars. Among others, he exerted a profound influence on Beta Bartok and Arnold Schoenberg, and Liszt's legacy extended throughout the twentieth century to North America and, more recently, to China. And we are still in the process of sorting out and understanding the legacies of the past and his times that influenced Liszt and his work, whether the thought of Lamartine, traditions of improvisation and transcription, the "paradox" of Hungary's Gypsy music, or mid-nineteenth century German politics. In collaboration with Michael Saffle, James Deaville of Carleton University has assembled a collection of essays devoted to these subjects as well as operatic aspects of the symphonic works, Liszt and theories of "degenerate genius," and Liszt in Hollywood film. An appendix includes studies of Liszt's documentary legacy. Profusely illustrated with musical examples, documentary facsimiles, and film stills

China and the West : music, representation, and reception by Hon-Lun Yang( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Western music reached China nearly four centuries ago, with the arrival of Christian missionaries, yet only within the last century has Chinese music absorbed its influence. The emergence of "Westernized" music from China -concurrent with the technological advances that have made global culture widely accessible - has not established a prominent presence in the West. China and the West brings together essays on centuries of Sino-Western musical exchange by musicologists, ethnomusicologists, and music theorists from around the world. It opens with a look at theoretical approaches of prior studies of musical encounters and a comprehensive survey of the intercultural and cross-cultural theoretical frameworks-exoticism, orientalism, globalization, transculturation, and hybridization-that inform these essays. Part I focuses on the actual encounters between Chinese and European musicians, their instruments and institutions, and the compositions inspired by these encounters, while Part II examines theatricalized and mediated East-West cultural exchanges, which often drew on stereotypical tropes, resulting in performances more inventive than accurate.Part III looks at the musical language, sonority, and subject matters of "intercultural" compositions by Eastern and Western composers. Essays in Part IV address reception studies and consider the ways in which differences are articulated in musical discourse by actors serving different purposes, whether self-promotion, commercial ma

Franz Liszt un musicien dans la société( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
