Afer the suicide of his formerly wealthy father, socialite Stephen Dallas moves to a small town and marries Stella, a woman far below his social station. Their marriage is a failure, and Stephen returns to New York, leaving Stella to raise their daughter, Laurel. Stella eventually agrees to divorce Stephen so that Stephen can marry a widow to provide a better home for Laurel, who by then has become a young woman. Laurel, however, prefers to stay with Stella, but after Stella marries a drunkard, is forced to live with her father. The film ends with Laurel's wedding ceremony, which Stella, standing in the rain outside, is almost prevented from watching. Barbara Stanwyck later starred in a 1937 re-make, directed by King Vidor.

After he roughly rejects her offer of a drink, a drunken miner gets into a brawl with him. Norton apparently kills him so his girlfriend shoots him. While Helga nurses him back to health, they fall in love. He receives a letter from his wife informing him that he has been proven innocent of a murder charge. He tries to rob the joint but is caught. Helga rescues him from the rope and agrees to marry "New Deck."

A young newlywed sees her husband, a teacher, drowned before her eyes. She decides to take up his mission herself, and after many years of dedicated service has become beloved by her students. However, when one of her students, in love with her daughter, is falsely accused of embezzling, she takes the blame. In fact, the guilty party is the son of one of the other school officials, embittered over his rejection by the teacher's daughter. Rather than be a burden on her daughter, the former teacher desperately tries to find work. Sadly, knowing no other job, and because of her age, all she can do is scrub floors. Eventually, she is found living in an abandoned house. Her old students gather to honor her, and she realizes her labor has not been in vain.
