The solution is obtained of the linear equations of equilibrium of an elastic body for the case of a force acting at a point within an isotropic body bounded by a plane. The results are obtained directly by an application of potential theory and Papkovitch functions. The results are identical with those of Mindlin (Physics 7:195-202, 1936) which were obtained by starting with Kelvin;s solution for a force in an infinite body and guessing the nuclei of strain to add outside of the semi-infinite body so as to annul the tractions on the plane boundary

The method of expansion of three-dimensional displacements in a double power series of the transverse coordinates is employed to find one-dimensional equations applicable to low frequency vibrations of uniform, elastic, isotropic and anisotropic bars. The axial displacements accompanying torsion are chosen specially for each cross-sectional shape of bar--resulting in the correct, or nearly correct, torsional rigidity. Applications are to bars of elliptic, triangular and rectangular sections, illustrating various independent and coupled extensional, flexural and torsional modes of motion. (Author)

In this paper, there is described an exact, closed solution of the Gazis-Herman-Wallis difference equations of a simple cubic crystal lattice for the case of torsion of an elastic bar of rectangular cross section. Examples are worked out for increasing numbers of particles in the cross section and various ratios of width to depth of cross section until the pattern of the warping function from de St. Venant's continuum solution is established. The displacement of each particle, characterizing the warping function, is given as a simple ratio of integers times the product of the angle of twist per unit length and the square of the distance between nearest neighbor particles. It is suggested that an anomaly, observed by C.A. Mead in measurements of the capacitance of thin dielectric films, may be due to an electromechanical effect not accounted for in the classical, continuum theory of piezoelectricity. A solution of equations that include the additional effect is shown to be capable of accommodating the experimental data. It is demonstrated that the augmented equations, rather than the classical ones, are a continuum approximation to the equations of a lattice of shell-model atoms. Analogous equilibrium solutions of the lattice and continuum equations are almost identical. (Author)
