R.D. Mindlin and Applied Mechanics is a collection of studies in the development of Applied Mechanics dedicated to Professor Raymond D. Mindlin by his former students. This book contains the development of specific areas of Mechanics of Solids to which Mindlin has contributed most. Organized into eight chapters, this text first discusses the past, present and likely future of photoelasticity. Subsequent chapters explore the development of the threedimensional theory of elasticity; generalized elastic continua; bodies in contact with applications to granular media; and waves and vibrations i

Force at a point in the interior of a semiinfinite solid by
Raymond D Mindlin(
Book
)
4 editions published between 1936 and 1953 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The solution is obtained of the linear equations of equilibrium of an elastic body for the case of a force acting at a point within an isotropic body bounded by a plane. The results are obtained directly by an application of potential theory and Papkovitch functions. The results are identical with those of Mindlin (Physics 7:195202, 1936) which were obtained by starting with Kelvin;s solution for a force in an infinite body and guessing the nuclei of strain to add outside of the semiinfinite body so as to annul the tractions on the plane boundary

Low frequency vibrations of elastic bars by
Raymond D Mindlin(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The method of expansion of threedimensional displacements in a double power series of the transverse coordinates is employed to find onedimensional equations applicable to low frequency vibrations of uniform, elastic, isotropic and anisotropic bars. The axial displacements accompanying torsion are chosen specially for each crosssectional shape of barresulting in the correct, or nearly correct, torsional rigidity. Applications are to bars of elliptic, triangular and rectangular sections, illustrating various independent and coupled extensional, flexural and torsional modes of motion. (Author)

Extensional waves along the edge of an elastic plate by J.J McCoy(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A solution of second order equations of extensional motion of plates is obtained for waves travelling along a free edge. The usual Rayleightype wave is found to become more and more confined to the edge of the plate as the frequency increases. Above a certain frequency another edge wave is found. (Author)

Crystal lattice theory of torsion of a rectangular bar of simple cubic structure by
Raymond D Mindlin(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this paper, there is described an exact, closed solution of the GazisHermanWallis difference equations of a simple cubic crystal lattice for the case of torsion of an elastic bar of rectangular cross section. Examples are worked out for increasing numbers of particles in the cross section and various ratios of width to depth of cross section until the pattern of the warping function from de St. Venant's continuum solution is established. The displacement of each particle, characterizing the warping function, is given as a simple ratio of integers times the product of the angle of twist per unit length and the square of the distance between nearest neighbor particles. Mechanics of granular media by
Raymond D Mindlin(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1954 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For a number of years, there has been under development a mathematical theory of the mechanical behavior of materials composed of discrete elastic grains in direct contact. Eventually, the theory is intended to predict stressstrain relations, stress distributions, vibrations, wave propagation phenomena and criteria of failure for such materials as are found in a bed of dry sand or the pile of grains in the carbon microphone

Note on axialshear and contour vibrations of prisms by
Raymond D Mindlin(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Exact solutions of the equations of the linear theory of elasticity are given for axialshear modes of vibration of an isotropic, prismatic bar whose normal section is an equilateral triangle or has the equilateral triangle as a module. A family of contour modes is also described for bars with a rhombic section formed of two equilateral triangles and with sections having the rhombus as a module. (Author)

Continuum and lattice theories of influence of electromechanical coupling on capacitance of thin dielectric films by
Raymond D Mindlin(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
It is suggested that an anomaly, observed by C.A. Mead in measurements of the capacitance of thin dielectric films, may be due to an electromechanical effect not accounted for in the classical, continuum theory of piezoelectricity. A solution of equations that include the additional effect is shown to be capable of accommodating the experimental data. It is demonstrated that the augmented equations, rather than the classical ones, are a continuum approximation to the equations of a lattice of shellmodel atoms. Analogous equilibrium solutions of the lattice and continuum equations are almost identical. (Author)
