Charmley turns to the Anglo-American "special relationship" that was the cornerstone of Churchill's foreign policy, ruthlessly stripping away the myth to reveal the unsentimental reality of the Churchill years and beyond, from 1940 to 1957. With vivid assessments of Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Churchill, and Eden, John Charmley brilliantly continues his thought-provoking - and sometimes infuriating - ways

An important new reappraisal of the immediate origins of World War II. "Entertaining and absorbing ... Chamberlain hardly emerges a hero from these pages, but at least there is no excuse left for regarding him as no more than a wimp in a wing-collar."--The Guardian

A history of conservative politics since 1830 by John Charmley ( Book )
6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 210 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
John Charmley has written an entertaining but fair account of one of the principal forces in modern British political history, illuminated throughout by a concentration upon the men, and the woman, who charted the party through a century of warfare and welfare. The second edition of this successful text is thoroughly updated to take into account the latest scholarship, and now has an earlier starting date to make sense of the importance of the Home Rule issue in defining late nineteenth-century Toryism. Charmley takes the story through the recent "wilderness years" following the 1997 election fiasco. - Publisher

Der Untergang des Britischen Empires : Roosevelt - Churchill und Amerikas Weg zur Weltmacht by John Charmley ( Book )
1 edition published in 2005 in German and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Churchill's grand alliance : the Anglo-American special relationship : 1940-1957 by John Charmley ( Book )
2 editions published between 1995 and 2009 in Undetermined and English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Anglo-American alliance was the cornerstone of Churchill's foreign policy after 1940, and from then onwards, the 'special relationship' has always been a feature of Anglo-American relations. Churchill carried on the war in 1940 because he believed that American help could save the British Empire. This book argues that his faith was misplaced
