An algorithm for planning 'sensible' routes by Ian Edwin Pratt( Book )
3 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "The problem of finding an optimal route between two points in a space strewn with obstacles has been extensively studied in robotics. The standard approach to such problems is first to reduce the original geometrical specification to a finite graph of possible routes, and then to use graph-searching techniques together with the metrical information available in the original geometrical specification to select the best of these routes. The algorithm presented here, by contrast, employs a 'first-past-the-post' approach to route planning. Specifically, we show that the algorithm is guaranteed to produced a route satisfying a certain criterion of 'sensibleness', because routes failing this criterion are always slower to get constructed
Spatial reasoning and route planning using sinusoidal transforms by Ian Edwin Pratt( Book )
3 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Thus, although it does not aspire to model human commonsense spatial reasoning, the system is conceived of as potentially playing the same rôle in a robot as that played by commonsense spatial reasoning in humans. The final section of the paper applies the sinusoidal representation scheme to the problem of route planning for a point moving in a plane strewn with convex obstacles. A method is developed to identify not the precise set of optimum paths, but rather, a set of sensible paths guaranteed to contain all such optima."

The expressive power of the English temporal preposition system by Ian Edwin Pratt( Book )
2 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "In this report, we present an account of the semantics of the English temporal prepositions. The approach taken here stresses the limited range of expressive possibilities afforded by these words, and pays particular attention to the irregular interactions they exhibit with verb-tense and -aspect. A framework is developed within which the semantics of English temporal expressions can be couched, allowing the temporal prepositions to be grouped according to their 'temporal function'. A key finding of the report is that the eighteen temporal prepositions considered here express, between them, at most six distinct temporal functions."
