Illustrations for The insulae of imperial Ostia by James E Packer( Visual )
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Photographs primarily taken by Packer between 1962-1968 for his book, The insulae of imperial Ostia (1971). Packer focused on apartment dwellings in Ostia, comparing them to similiar structures in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Rome. Ostia, the port of Rome which lies at the mouth of the Tiber River, is considered to be a small scale version of ancient Rome. The first systematic excavations in Ostia were undertaken in the early 19th century, continuing under Pope Pius XI (1855-1870), and then by the Italian government (1870-1907). Excavations continued under Dante Vaglieri (1865-1913), the first Director of Excavations, and his successor Guido Calza (1888-1946). In 1953 the government began publication of the mulit-volume series, The scavi di Ostia to highlight the archeological findings there
