Berlin, symphony of a great city by SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg( Visual )

5 editions published in 1927 in English and German and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This early experimental film captures a day and a night in the city of Berlin circa 1926. The film is a symphony of visual impressions inspired by the work of the great Dziga Vertov, director of Man With A Movie Camera. Because Ruttmann's work was not censored like Vertov's, this film helped to bring Vertov's editing techniques and theories to an international audience when it was released in 1927. Berlin Symphony Of A Great City is an attempt to capture the texture of a city's life. Despite the initial involvement of writer Carl Meyer and the accomplished camerawork of Karl Freund, this is Walter Ruttmann's film. Ruttmann carried the lyrical aesthetic of his paintings and abstract films into the shaping of this experimental film, where the city itself is the central character. The city's architecture, the streets, and the machinery of industry along with the citizens of Berlin, are woven together to create a poetic document of a great European metropolis captured in action. "Since I began in the cinema, I had the idea of making something out of life, of creating a symphonic film out of the millions of energies that comprise the life of a big city." Walter Ruttmann
