"The painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. He is now best known for his sumptuous oil paintings of solitary women from the 1860s and 1870s. These were a major influence on European Symbolism at the end of the nineteenth century, and were admired by Salvador Dali as embodiments of the 'Eternal Feminine' in 1936." "In this overview of Rossetti's career, however, Lisa Tickner suggests that the later oils have obscured an interest in his earlier work and his achievements as a draughtsman and illustrator. She discusses the jewel-like watercolours of the 1850s, inspired by themes from Dante and Arthurian legend, and argues that it was, paradoxically, when Rossetti was most in thrall to the mythic past that he was at his most innovative and visionary. This timely reassessment presents a picture of a complex and highly original artist."--BOOK JACKET
Walter Sickert : the Camden Town nudes by Walter Sickert ( Book )
2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to the group of female nudes painted by Walter Sickert (1860-1942) in and around Camden Town between 1905 and 1912. The uncompromising realism of Sickert's nudes, set in the murky interiors of cheap lodging houses, broke artistic conventions and shocked critics. Today they are recognised as being among his most important contributions to the development of twentieth-century art." "This publication looks in detail at Sickert's reinvention of the nude as a subject of modern painting. It explores the ways in which he attempted to overturn outmoded traditions of the genre and pursue instead a stridently realist approach. These ambitions achieved their most profound expression in his so-called Camden Town Murder paintings which are brought together in this exhibition for the first time. Walter Sickert: The Camden Town Nudes offers an account of this important body of work by one of the most significant British artists of the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET

Most of us, at various moments in our lives, either adopt a tourist' identity of are framed within another's tourist experience. Travellers' Tales investigates the future for travelling in a world whose boundaries are shifting and dissolving. The contributors bring together popular and critical discourses of travel to explore questions of identity and politics; history and narration; collecting and representing other cultures, and tourism. Travellers' Tales oscillate between the thrill of novel experiences and unexpected pleasures, and the alienation and loneliness of exile in a strange land. The contributions review recent work on the discourses of tourism, travel and cultural politics; the effects of global interactions and local resistances, and the ways in which records, memorials and signs have all been used to describe the experience of encountering the other'
