Wiel Arets, one of the most influential architects practicing today, is renowned for the transparent clarity and rigid geometry of his work. Austere but humane, his buildings evince a forceful presence yet retain a remarkable sensitivity to their urban context. Reputed for such diverse designs as the Academy of Art and Architecture in Maastricht, a skyscraping Amsterdam apartment tower, the corporate headquarters for the AZL Pension Fund, police stations in Boxtel and Vaals, and a series of spiritually rich residences (including his own), Arets is a rising star on the international scene and is revered in his native Holland as a modern master in the tradition of Louis I. Kahn. The first full-length monograph on his work, Wiel Arets features hundreds of stunning photographs by the acclaimed architectural photographer Hélène Binet. It contains critical essays by architect and writer Xavier Costa; Anthony Vidler, dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union in New York; New York-based architects and theorists Greg Lynn and Stan Allen; and Bart Lootsma, architectural critic and author of SuperDutch: New Architecture in the Netherlands. Arets's works are rooted in his interests in philosophy and his own theorization of architecture. His writings, included here as an indispensable complement to his buildings, address such topics as virology, rhizomes, and translucency. "Skins" - the sometimes transparent, sometimes opaque membranes that define buildings and cities - are at the core of his reflections on the modern city. -- from dust jacket

Wiel Arets by Bas Princen( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book encapsulates a journey throughout the life of twelve buildings, from construction to inhabitation, by architect Wiel Arets, as experienced by artist Bas Princen. The acclaimed architect Wiel Arets (*1955 in Heerlen) is also known as a designer, author, and educator, and is the Dean of the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Wiel Arets Architects (WAA), which was founded in 1983, has branches in Amsterdam, Maastricht, and Zürich. The architecture within the book's pages emanates from an unexpected lens, to those familiar with Arets' work; columns seem to be composed of trees; fritted surfaces resemble abstract paintings; technical spaces replicate sculptural silhouettes. The concentrated photographs by Bas Princen not only capture the atmosphere of the twelve buildings, but also convey the impact and powerful symbolism of architecture in its most primeval sense-as protective shelter
