Charles-Nicolas Cochin et l'art des Lumières by Christian Michel( Book )

23 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in French and Undetermined and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this dissertation is to illustrate the role of one of the most influencial artists in the Eighteenth Century France, Cochin. The first part is devoted to Cochin and the social life of his time. Coming from the middle-class, he became, thanks to his achievement as a draughman and an engraver, as well as to his social abilities, the secretary of the Royal Academy of Painting, and the go-between the royal administration and the artists. If his influence decrease after 1770, he remains nevertheless a major figure until he died. The second part is devoted to Cochin's theories in art. He tried to change the traditional shapes of the academic rhetoric in order to give an account of the contemporary art. Often critical, his thoughts lead him to propose some plans of change and improvement in the contemporary way of painting. The third part is a study of Cochin's influence over the artistic creation. His own kind of art forbids him to realize his ideas through his draughtmanship. Even when he tried to advise and help the other artist in giving them designs, as well providing them with financial or administrative supports, he did not fully succeed. Nevertheless Cochin's position and action remain crucial

9 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The hidden lives of works of art( Visual )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The artist who created the fete galante painting style achieved wide recognition during his lifetime, and yet virtually all of Antoine Watteau's major works are cloaked in mystery, raising unanswered questions as to their origins, provenances, and meanings. Should his Pilgrimage to Cythera be interpreted as an arrival or a departure? Why, and for whom, was the no less innovative Pierrot (or Gilles) brought into being? Is the air of melancholy that envelops typically light-hearted subjects an artifact from Watteau's era, perhaps even a hint of his innermost self, or is it merely a side effect of our modern perspective? These questions and many others are woven into the Rococo master's legacy. To address them the Louvre initiated its Watteau Study Days, documented here in this fascinating film. Viewers are shown highlights from a 48-hour period in which important works were taken down from the walls and out of their frames, then subjected to detailed study by leading art historians

9 editions published in 2013 in French and Italian and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
