Eyelids of morning; the mingled destinies of crocodiles and men. Being a description of the origins, history, and prospects of Lake Rudolf, its peoples, deserts, rivers, mountains, and weather by A. D Graham( Book )

10 editions published between 1973 and 1990 in English and held by 726 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hailed by reviewers as "enthralling," "spectacular," and "vividly dramatic," when it was first published in 1974. EYELIDS OF MORNING remains a standard for natural history reporting, stunning wildlife photography, cutting-edge ecological ideas, and hard-core realism. The legendary and fearsome Nile crocodiles and the Turkana tribespeople who live side by side with them are the focus of this newly reissued classic, the dramatic and adventurous tale of Alistair Graham's three years of research on Kenya's Lake Rudolf. Joined by photographer Peter Beard-whose prodigious talent is displayed here in over two hundred full-color and duotone photographs-Graham undertook an investigation into the habits, history, and dubious future of one of the last great crocodile populations on earth in an unprecedented scientific effort to prevent this population's almost certain extinction. From years filled with near-fatal encounters with crocodiles, bandits, and drowning, and a variety of conflicts with the Turkanas, the authors fashioned a moving and captivating account of the crocodiles' profound influence on native myths, symbols, and everyday lives. This is also a sobering documentation of the devastating impact that hunters, explorers, and developers have had on the crocodiles' existence as well as a hard look at essential population dynamics and the politics of sheer survival in a world racing toward ecological disaster. A monumental work, EYELIDS OF MORNING will fascinate anyone concerned with the plight of African wildlife-and the future of humanity itself."--Jacket
Buffalo Bill's Wild West : an American legend by R. L Wilson( Book )

3 editions published between 1998 and 2004 in English and held by 483 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a panoramic celebration of colorful characters who created the image of the West for Americans and for the world. It also celebrates the exciting and often flamboyant accoutrements and costumes which were part and parcel of the stars' public appearance, and honors such characters as William Mathewson, recognized even by Cody himself as the "original Buffalo Bill." It is an unmatched chronicle drawn upon decades of research and collecting, augmented with images by master photographers
The art of the Maasai : 300 newly discovered objects and works of art by Gillies Turle( Book )

3 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book presents for the first time 300 extraordinary ceremonial artifacts - discovered by Gillies Turle and never before seen outside the villages to which they belong - that were created over many generations by members of the Maasai tribe of Kenya. What makes their discovery particularly exciting is that high art has been found in a part of the world in which, until now, it was believed no art had ever been created. In his text, Turle talks about the significance of these objects - symbols of Maasai spiritual life used by the tribe's leader, the laibon, in ceremonies of healing, marriage, circumcision, admission into elderhood, and other crucial human occasions. We see a sculpted hippopotamus tooth, mortars made from elephants' pelvic bone sockets, ivory clubs, and carved rhinoceros horns, especially honored for the power of the great beasts themselves and for the courage of the men who captured them ... Turle gives us, as well, the feeling and the rhythm of the Kenya he has come to know, from the Ngong Hills and the Great Rift Valley to the Magadi Flats and the Aberdare Range. During the ten years of his friendship with the Maasai, they revealed to him their past and the hidden heart of their world. He describes their ceremonies and rituals, and the ways in which they have retained their own culture. He tells how they shielded themselves from the outside world until, in recent years, the Kenyan government outlawed many of their customs and seized their open tribal plains, so that now they must struggle to maintain space for themselves and for the cattle that are their most precious possessions. The ceremonial objects brought together here are extraordinary, and Peter Beard's photographs of them are in themselves works of art. This is a book whose publication is an event in the worlds of art and African culture."--Jacket
