Bonfire songs : Savonarola's musical legacy by Patrick Paul Macey( Book )

9 editions published in 1998 in English and Undetermined and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An underground tradition of sacred songs--Italian laude--thrived in Italy during the sixteenth century. The texts of many were written by the condemned heretic Fra Girolamo Savonarola, who was burned at the stake in Florence in 1498. This study explores the religious and social functions of these laude during Savonarola's time in Florence. It also reconstructs music for laude written to venerate the friar after his death. Savonarola's meditations on Psalms 30 and 50 were also set to music as motets by some of the leading composers of the 16th century, in a style of "high art" music remarkably distinct from the more popular tone of the lauda. These complex motets were often the result of networks of patronage at courts in Ferrara, France, and England. The book includes a CD with a selection of performances of the music discussed. --From publisher's description
Make a joyful noise : Renaissance art and music at Florence Cathedral( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book breaks the silence that has artificially surrounded one of the greatest masterpieces of Early Renaissance Florence: Luca della Robbia's Cantoria. This silence has never regarded the quality or historical significance of Luca's famed organ loft--far from it, in fact. Since its installation in Florence Cathedral in 1438, Luca's Cantoria--his first documented work--has been recognized as an undisputed masterpiece, epitomizing the classical spirit of the Renaissance"
