Peirce's philosophical perspectives by Vincent G Potter( )

13 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 1,104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Peirce's Philosophical Perspectives brings together penetrating studies of the United States' greatest philosopher by a foremost expositor. It stands shoulder to shoulder with Potter's Charles S. Peirce: On Norms and Ideals, a study whose main emphases and central concerns have been corroborated by later developments in Peirce scholarship. The present collection focuses primarily on Peirce's realism, pragmatism, and theism, with attention also being paid to his tychism (or doctrine of objective chance) and synechism (or insistence upon the reality and irreducibility of continuity). In exhibiting the connections among these doctrines, the collection reveals a unity of its own. The essays themselves are readily accessible and lucid, though neither accessibility nor lucidity is purchased at the price of subtlety or vigor. Together they provide a first-rate account of what are a first-rank philosopher's signal contributions to contemporary debates about reality, knowledge, and God."--Jacket

The task of criticism : essays on philosophy, history, and community by John William Miller( Book )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Here is a new chapter in American thought, devoted to the authority of critique and the defense of democracy. Erudite and eloquent, John William Miller's writing engages readers by means of its (as he said) "earthy" treatment of basic philosophical questions. Challenging the dogmatism and nihilism that mark so much of recent philosophy, Miller advocates a thoughtful and engaged approach to life - one that revitalizes philosophical activity, embraces history, and joins reflection with participation in a democratic community." "The Task of Criticism is a survey of Miller's historicist philosophy. The editors have selected and written insightful introductions for 29 of Miller's best and most representative essays. A comprehensive introduction to the volume places Miller's thought in context and exhibits the contemporary relevance of his philosophy."--Jacket

Conceptual tension : essays on kinship, politics, and individualism by Leon J Goldstein( )

2 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'Conceptual tension : essays on kinship, politics, and individualism' is a critical philosophical examination of the role of concepts and concept formation in social sciences. Written by Leon J. Goldstein, a preeminent Jewish philosopher who examined the epistemological foundations of social science inquiry during the second half of the twentieth century, the book undertakes a study of concept formation and change by looking at the four critical terms in anthropology (kinship), politics (parliament and Rousseau's concept of the general will), and sociology (individualism). The author challenges prevailing notions of concept formation and definition, specifically assertions by Gottlieb Frege that concepts have fixed, clear boundaries that are not subject to change. Instead, drawing upon arguments by R.G. Collingwood, Goldstein asserts that concepts have a historical dimension with boundaries and meanings that change with their use and context. Goldstein's work provides insight for philosophers, historians, political scientists, anthropologists, and Judaica scholars interested in the study and meaning of critical concepts within their fields.--

Readings in epistemology : from Aquinas, Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant by Vincent G Potter( Book )

2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A companion volume to On Understanding Understanding, this second edition incorporates corrections to the previous text and includes new readings. The works collected in this volume are mainly from the British Empiricists. The breadth of the selection is not so diverse that the pieces cannot be readily understood by a newcomer to Epistemology, they have a logical progression of development (from Locke to Berkeley to Hume), and all of the philosophers whose work is represented have had great influence on contemporary Anglo-American philosophy. In the Introduction, Potter sets the selections in their historical context and urges the readers to form their own viewpoint in terms of the periodʹs contribution to the advancement of culture, politics, and society. He gives a concise summary of the Enlightenment period, demonstrating how and why Rationalism and Empiricism came about, and challenges the reader not to simply note the points of disparity between the two schools, but to notice the similarities of their common assumptions -- both substantive and methodological.-- Publisher description
