King René betrothes his baby daughter to Tristan, the son of the Count de Vaudemont, in order to settle the ill-will between them. A conflagration breaks out in the castle and the queen saves her child by throwing her from the parapets. The baby lands with no injuries except blindness. Out of fear that Tristan will refuse to marry a blind woman, King René beckons the aid of Ebn Jahia, the Moorish physician, who declares that she will regain her sight when sixteen if she learns of her blindness. After she has been secluded in a country cottage, Tristan discovers Iolanthe and tells her of her lack of sight, whereupon she can see again
