The painted lady is about a lovely young woman who meets a man at an ice cream social. He seems interested in her, but he is actually a burglar interested in breaking into her father's house. One is business, the other is crime intercuts between the lives of two couples married on the same day, one rich, one poor. In Death's marathon two business partners pursue the same woman. She accepts the marriage proposal of the irresponsible partner, much to her later regret. The battle of Elderbush Gulch shows two sisters who arrive in the wild West and must confront gun battles and Indian attacks.
