Correspondence and legal papers of Samuel Nelson, lawyer and justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. An early document in the collection, dated August 1819, is the record of a lawsuit tried in the New York State Supreme Court. A letter of November 30, 1829 is from Nelson to Henry Randall, a law student, on the problems of studying law. Several letters are to Henry Scott, Cashier of the 1st National Bank of Cooperstown. One letter is to William Holt Averill of Cooperstown, and discusses setting up a trust in a will. The latest letter, dated November 28, 1872, is to Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, enclosing his resignation from the U.S. Supreme Court. Also includes Nelson's appointment as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1845 and a volume given to Nelson upon his retirement by the Bench and Bar of the State of New York, signed by the members
