The soil and health; a study of organic agriculture by Albert Howard( Book )

22 editions published between 1947 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 692 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Soil and Health argues that industrial agriculture, emergent in Howard's era and dominant today, disrupts the delicate balance of nature and irrevocably robs the soils of its fertility. Howard's classic treatise links the burgeoning health crisis facing crops, livestock, and humanity to this radical degradation of the earth's soil. His message - that we must respect and restore the health of the soil for the benefit of future generations - still resonates among those who are concerned about the effects of chemically enhanced agriculture.--COVER

The formation of vegetable mould, through the action of worms, with observations on their habits by Charles Darwin( Book )

6 editions published between 1945 and 1966 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, published in 1881, was the result of many years of experimentation and observation by Darwin in the open-air laboratory of his garden at Down House in Kent. As he wrote in his introduction, the subject of soil disturbance by worms 'may appear an insignificant one, but we shall see that it possesses some interest'. He goes on to demonstrate the immensity - in size and over time - of the accumulated tiny movements of soil by earthworms, and their vital role in aerating the soil and breaking down vegetable material to keep the topsoil, the growing medium for all plant life and thus vital to human existence, fertile and healthy. At a time when there is huge interest in growing food organically and without using artificial fertilisers, Darwin's insights are as important, and his descriptions of his experiments as fascinating, as they were in the late nineteenth century

Sir Albert Howard's "Farming and Gardening for Health or Disease" is based on observations of traditional farming methods in South Asia. Sent from Britain to work as an agricultural advisor to teach the locals how to farm, Howard quickly discovered that they had much more to teach him, and particularly noted the connection between healthy soil and the villages' healthy populations, livestock and crop. The ideas and holistic principles he articulated inspired the founders of the Soil Association
