Proposing a new paradigm for perceptual science that goes beyond standard information theory and digital computation
Meaning and cognition a multidisciplinary approach by Lilana Albertazzi ( )
15 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 1,148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The aim of this book is to present significant aspects of cognitive grammar by adopting an interdisciplinary approach. The book provides an interplay of contributions by some exponents of cognitive grammar (Langacker, Croft, Wood, Geeraerts, Kövecses, Wildgen), and philosophers of language (Albertazzi, Marconi, Peruzzi, Violi) who, in most cases, share a phenomenological and Gestalt approach to the problem of semantics. The topics covered include themes that are central to the debate in cognitive grammar, such as, metaphor, construal operations, prototypicality, Gestalt schemes and field semant
Visual thought the depictive space of perception by Liliana Albertazzi ( )
11 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1,007 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume starts from an interdisciplinary expertise of the contributors, and chooses to work on the very origins of conscious qualitative states in perception. The leading research paradigm can be synthesized in 'phenomenology to neurons to stimuli, and backwards', since as a starting point it is taken the phenomenal appearances in the visual field. Specifically, the leading theme of the volume is the co-presence and interaction of diverse types of spaces in vision, like the optical space of psychophysics and of neural elaboration, the qualitative space of phenomenal appearances, and its re
Unfolding perceptual continua by Liliana Albertazzi ( )
12 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 996 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The book analyses the differences between the mathematical interpretation and the phenomenological intuition of the continuum. The basic idea is that the continuity of the experience of space and time originates in phenomenic movement. The problem of consciousness and of the spaces of representation is related to the primary processes of perception. Conceived as an interplay between cognitive science, linguistics and philosophy, the book presents a conceptual framework based on a dynamic and experimental approach to the problem of the continuum. Besides presenting the primitives of a theory of
Immanent realism an introduction to Brentano by Liliana Albertazzi ( )
18 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in English and held by 606 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Brentano conducted pioneering analyses of problems that are in the focus of cognitive science and artificial intelligence: from the problem of reference to representation. This book guides the readers through Brentano's life and works, investigating into the inherent complexity of both his view of mental life and the related methodology
Cognitive aspects of bilingualism by István Kecskés ( )
16 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A unique feature of this book is that chapters favor that line of cognitive linguistics which makes a clear distinction between real world and projected world. Information conveyed by language must be about the projected world. Both the experimental results and the systematic claims in this volume call for a weak form of whorfianism. Also, chapters add some relatively unexplored issues of bilingualism to the well-known ones, such as gender systems in the bilingual mind, context and task, synergic concepts, blending, the relationship between lexical categorization and ontological categorization
The school of Alexius Meinong ( Book )
7 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 269 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The dawn of cognitive science : early European contributors by Liliana Albertazzi ( Book )
10 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Current debate in cognitive science, from robotics to analysis of vision, deals with problems like the perception of form, the structure and formation of mental images and their modelling, the ecological development of artificial intelligence, and cognitive analysis of natural language. It focuses in particular on the presence of a hierarchy of intellectual constructions in different formats of representation. These diverse approaches, which share a common assumption of the inner nature of representation, call for a new epistemology - even a new psychophysics - based on a theory of reference which is intrinsically cognitive. As a contribution to contemporary research, the reading presents the core of theories developed in Central Europe between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by philosophers, physicists, psychologists and semanticists who shared a dynamic approach and a pronounced concern with problems of interaction and dependence. These theories offer innovative solutions to some of the epistemological and philosophical problems currently at the centre of debate, like part-whole, theory of relations, and conceptual and linguistic categorization
The school of Franz Brentano by Liliana Albertazzi ( Book )
13 editions published between 1995 and 2011 in English and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The School of Franz Brentano provides a fascinating picture of both the life and thought of Franz Brentano and his main pupils. The volume is divided into three sections, presenting: a detailed reconstruction of Brentano's life and contributions to philosophy; separate studies of Brentano's most important students (von Ehrenfels, Husserl, Marty, Meinong, Stumpf, and Twardowski); separate studies of the main philosophical problems or areas of Brentano's writings.£/LIST£ The book is the first wide reconstruction of Brentano's intellectual legacy, with topics such as philosophy of mind, ontology, philosophy of language, logic and theory of values
Handbook of Experimental Phenomenology : Visual Perception of Shape, Space and Appearance by Liliana Albertazzi ( )
11 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
While the scientific study of vision is well-advanced, a universal theory of qualitative visual appearances (texture, shape, colour and so on) is still lacking. This interdisciplinary handbook presents the work of leading researchers around the world who have taken up the challenge of defining and formalizing the field of 'experimental phenomenology'. Presents and discusses a new perspective in vision science, and formalizes a field of study that will become increasingly significant to researchers in visual science and beyondThe contributors are outstanding sc
Shapes of forms : from gestalt psychology and phenomenology to ontology and mathematics by Liliana Albertazzi ( Book )
8 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The development of research connected with artificial intelligence and the cognitive sciences obliges us to confront further components of the traditional problem of form. In particular, the debate about bottom up and top down processes seems to suggest that the difference in cognitive processes is more a difference of degree than of kind internally to a form, i.e. a structure, consisting of different layers. Even if there is no single or fundamental theory of forms, in this volume the concept of form is analyzed in different fields (ranging from ontology to language, mathematics, and psychology , and in its different aspects according to a more modern theory of knowledge
