Perception beyond inference : the information content of visual processes( Book )

13 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and held by 321 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book breaks with the conventional model of perception that views vision as a mere inference to an objective reality on the basis of "inverse optics." The authors offer the alternative view that perception is an expressive and awareness-generating process. Perception creates semantic information in such a way as to enable the observer to deal efficaciously with the chaotic and meaningless structure present at the physical boundary between the body and its surroundings. Vision is intentional by its very nature; visual qualities are essential and real, providing an aesthetic and meaningful interface to the structures of physics and the state of the brain. This view brings perception firmly in line with ethology and modern evolutionary biology and suggests new approaches in all disciplines that study, or require an understanding of, the ontology of mind. The book is the joint effort of a multidisciplinary group of authors. Topics covered include the relationships among stimuli, neuronal processes, and visual awareness. After considering the mind-dependent growing of information, the book treats time and dynamics; color, shape, and space; language and perception; perception, art, and design

Cognitive aspects of bilingualism by Istvn Kecsks( Book )

16 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 158 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The chapters in this volume favour that line of cognitive linguistics which makes a clear distinction between real world and projected world. Information conveyed by language must be about the projected world. Both the experimental results and the systematic claims call for a weak form of whorfianism
The school of Franz Brentano by Liliana Albertazzi( Book )

13 editions published between 1995 and 2011 in English and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The School of Franz Brentano provides a fascinating picture of both the life and thought of Franz Brentano and his main pupils. The volume is divided into three sections, presenting: a detailed reconstruction of Brentano's life and contributions to philosophy; separate studies of Brentano's most important students (von Ehrenfels, Husserl, Marty, Meinong, Stumpf, and Twardowski); separate studies of the main philosophical problems or areas of Brentano's writings./LIST The book is the first wide reconstruction of Brentano's intellectual legacy, with topics such as philosophy of mind, ontology, philosophy of language, logic and theory of values
Visual thought : the depictive space of perception by Liliana Albertazzi( Book )

10 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume starts from an interdisciplinary expertise of the contributors, and chooses to work on the very origins of conscious qualitative states in perception. The leading research paradigm can be synthesized in 'phenomenology to neurons to stimuli, and backwards', since as a starting point it is taken the phenomenal appearances in the visual field. Specifically, the leading theme of the volume is the co-presence and interaction of diverse types of spaces in vision, like the optical space of psychophysics and of neural elaboration, the qualitative space of phenomenal appearances, and its re
Shapes of forms : from gestalt psychology and phenomenology to ontology and mathematics by Liliana Albertazzi( Book )

10 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The development of research connected with artificial intelligence and the cognitive sciences obliges us to confront further components of the traditional problem of form. In particular, the debate about bottom up and top down processes seems to suggest that the difference in cognitive processes is more a difference of degree than of kind internally to a form, i.e. a structure, consisting of different layers. Even if there is no single or fundamental theory of forms, in this volume the concept of form is analyzed in different fields (ranging from ontology to language, mathematics, and psychology), and in its different aspects according to a more modern theory of knowledge. Audience: Systematic Philosophers, Philosophers of Language, Psychologists, Linguists

Handbook of experimental phenomenology : visual perception of shape, space and appearance by Liliana Albertazzi( Book )

17 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While the scientific study of vision is well-advanced, a universal theory of qualitative visual appearances (texture, shape, colour and so on) is still lacking. This interdisciplinary handbook presents the work of leading researchers around the world who have taken up the challenge of defining and formalizing the field of 'experimental phenomenology'. Presents and discusses a new perspective in vision science, and formalizes a field of study that will become increasingly significant to researchers in visual science and beyond

Qu'est-ce que l'oeuvre aujourd'hui? du théâtre à l'architecture by Liliana Albertazzi( Book )

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in French and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

[4] of cover
