Ethnic intimacy : race, law, and citizenship in Korean America by Hyŏn-hŭi Kim( Book )

This dissertation is an ethnographic study exploring how different Korean ethnics such as legal professionals, small business owners, and manual laborers navigate the diverse meanings of law, race, and citizenship in New York City. Particularly, I focus on the relationship between Korean legal professionals and their coethnic clients comprised of mostly small business owners or manual laborers. This particular coethnic relationship exemplifies various divides within the New York Korean community according to class, racial/ethnic identities, migration, and family history. Specifically, I examine how Korean legal professionals are interpellated as ethnic subjects in mediating the paths of Korean immigrants toward U.S. citizenship. In contrast, other Koreans---small businessmen and laborers---often challenge the U.S. legal order or disrupt clean-cut legal categories of citizenship and its entitlements. I employ "ethnic intimacy" to illustrate how the coethnic relationships become laden with tensions and ambivalence in coping with different understandings and approaches to citizenship. In spite of their differences, most Koreans feel marginalized socially and politically and even legal professionals feel insecure about their place in the U.S. society. I argue that the coethnic relationships are grounded in, consolidate, and reproduce racial meanings implied in the contrasts of "being Korean" and "being American," and of "being a minority" and "being in the mainstream." I posit that Korean ethnics' struggles for American citizenship illustrate the process of the differential, but converging, ethnic subject formation of a late immigrant group

CFD analysis of combustion characteristics for fuel switching to bioliquid in oil-fired power plant( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Highlights: Palm based bioliquid (BL) was burned in a 100 MWe heavy fuel oil (HFO) boiler. Combustion characteristics of HFO and BL were studied by CFD. BL firing led to lower radiation and more uniform temperature in the burner zone. Heat transfer rate became lower on the membrane wall but higher in the downstream. A major reduction in SO x and NO x emissions was achieved by the fuel switching. Abstract: Complete fuel switching from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to bioliquid (BL) was demonstrated in a 100 MWe-capacity boiler with a tangential firing configuration. The BL from the residue of palm oil production successfully replaced HFO at the full load (103 MWe) with new atomizers and minor adjustments to the operating parameters. The detailed combustion and heat transfer characteristics of the two fuels were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Compared to the HFO firing case, more uniform distributions of the gas temperature and heat transfer rate were observed in the combustion zone for the BL firing case. The total heat transfer rate was slightly lower on the furnace wall (evaporator), but this disadvantage was offset by the increased convection in the downstream heat exchangers. Because of the low soot concentration, the contribution of convection in the BL-firing case was larger in the lower furnace. A significant reduction in SO x and NO x emissions was achieved due to the low S and N content of BL, which would be the main benefit of fuel switching, in addition to the minimization of greenhouse gas emissions. In the future, the CFD model established in this study could be applied to the evaluation of BL different candidates and various co-firing cases with HFO

Reduction of main steam temperature deviation in a tangentially coal-fired, two pass boiler( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Highlights: The main steam temperature deviation has been analyzed with CFD and plant data. The plant tests have been carried out in an 800 MW tangentially coal-fired boiler. The changes in injection angles of over-fire air reduced the deviation substantially. Abstract: This paper describes the main steam temperature deviation and its reduction by changing the injection angles of over-fire air in a 800 MW, tangentially coal-fired, two pass boiler. The CFD simulation showed that the simulated gas temperatures and velocities in the furnace are well matched with the steam temperatures along the steam pathways and the tube metal temperatures of the heaters. The changes in injection angles of over-fire air clearly affect the temperature and flow fields in front of the final superheater, in turn, the main steam temperatures at the final superheater outlet. With the findings of the CFD simulation and the relevant plant data, the field tests to reduce the deviation were performed by changing the yaw and tilt angles of Separate Over-Fire Air (SOFA) and Closed Coupled Over-Fire Air (CCOFA). The field tests showed that, under the optimized injection angles of SOFA and CCOFA, the main steam temperature deviation was reduced from 27 °C to 9 °C and the reheat steam temperature was increased to the desired value

Autumn brocade = Kinshu by Teru Miyamoto( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in Korean and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The word kinshu has many connotations: brocade, po etic writing, the brilliance of autumn leaves, and here resonates as a vibrant metaphor for the complex, intimate relationship between Aki and Yasuaki, a divorced and long-estranged couple. Ten years after their divorce, they meet by chance at a mountain resort. In a flood of emotions and memories, Aki initiates a new correspondence, and letter by letter through the seasons, the secrets of their past unfold as they reflect on their present struggles
