"Embroidered Samplers from the outstanding collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum provide both a historical survey of this popular needlework art and a practical guide to the different types of stitches. Details of individual motifs are shown alongside full colour photographs of the complete samplers while stitch types and techniques are explained through photographic details and clear line drawings." "Samplers provides a gallery of some of the most important and beautiful pieces in the V & A and an opportunity to see in close-up fragile objects which by their nature cannot remain on permanent display or be seen in strong light."--Jacket

Decorative textiles from Arab & Islamic cultures : selected works from the Al Lulwa collection by Jennifer Mary Wearden( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The exceptional collection published here ranges widely in region, material and technique. There are textiles and garments from North Africa, Syria, Arabia, Iran, Turkey and the Indian subcontinent linked by a shared vocabulary of ornament - evidence of the international nature of Islamic design. Materials represented are silk - the most prestigious of fibres, requiring highly respected weavers - wool, cotton and linen. Decoration is based on variations of weave and colour and embellishment through embroidery, printing and appliqué and illustrates the work of both professional and domestic workers. The strengths of the collection are concentrated in the textile production of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which, thanks to the basically conservative nature of textile technique and design, preserve and continue the traditions established in the medieval Islamic world. They are important in an assessment of Islamic textiles both for their quality and as illustrations of survival and adaptation in a major industry. Their heritage reaches back well over a thousand years, even though their very high perishability means that for the earlier part of the tradition our knowledge is reliant very largely on written sources. These, however, attest to the superb quality and quantity of textiles at the courts of the period."--Amazon.com

Lace from the Victoria and Albert museum by Clare Woodthorpe Browne( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Among the many outstanding textile collections in the V&A, hand-made lace is one of the most exquisite. The collection is comprehensive in its coverage of the technique over more than three hundred years, whether the delicate geometric perfection favoured by Elizabethan courtiers, or the bold floral exuberance of the Victorian age. Clare Browne has selected 100 examples across this range of designs and fashions in lace, to demonstrate the variety, skill and beauty lace makers have achieved in their work." "Details have all been specially photographed, and the result is a feast for the eye as well as a survey of exquisite craftsmanship. This book will be additionally valuable as a record of important parts of a collection which by its nature is too fragile to be kept on permanent display, and offers a wide-ranging survey of the art and craft of lace making down the ages."--BOOK JACKET
