"Plusieurs enfants qui sont affectés par un trouble envahissant du développement (autisme atypique) sont découragés d'apprendre une deuxième langue à cause de leur handicap. En général, ces enfants ont un déficit au niveau du comportement, de l'interaction sociale, et de la communication. Cependant, il existe quelques méthodes d'apprentissage qui peuvent aider des personnes handicapées à apprendre une langue autre que leur langue maternelle. Des méthodes behavioristes sont recommandées pour que les enfants autistes apprennent à s'exprimer. Les techniques employées consistent en de la répétition, du modelage, des activités physiques et de l'imitation. En utilisant ces techniques, est-ce que ces enfants affectés peuvent apprendre des éléments d'une autre langue, comme le vocabulaire? Ma recherche présente une étude de cas d'un enfant autiste qui apprend des mots de vocabulaire dans sa langue seconde. Néanmoins, parce que le syndrome est sur un large spectre et qu'il y a une variété de symptômes, les enfants sont affectés différemment. Pour cette raison, j'ai opté pour une étude de cas. Cependant, il est impossible de généraliser les résultats. L'apprentissage de la langue seconde, le français, était échelonné sur une période de huit semaines. J'ai procédé avec un test au commencement du programme et un test à la fin des huit semaines afin de mesurer si le sujet a acquis du vocabulaire. J'ai fait une collecte de données tous les jours pour mesurer le progrès accompli. L'apprentissage s'est fait pendant des périodes de 30 minutes du lundi au vendredi pendant deux mois. J'ai employé des techniques de méthodes behavioristes ainsi que des matériaux visuels tels que des photos et des cartes pour lui montrer des mots de vocabulaire en français. Ces techniques m'ont permis de montrer des mots essentiels sélectionnés venant de 17 catégories diverses comme: Les chiffres, les lettres, les verbes de base, les couleurs et les formes. À la suite des huit semaines, j'ai fait un test avec le sujet. Le test a démontré qu'effectivement quelqu'un peut apprendre des éléments d'une langue autre que sa langue maternelle en utlisant des techniques de méthodes behavioristes. Le sujet a fait l'acquisition de 206 mots en français sur 248 mots enseignés. Cependant, avec le test seulement, il n'est pas possible de dire si cette information est généralisée ou non. Il est nécessaire d'effectuer plus de recherche pour voir si le sujet a assimilé les sens ou juste les mots. Il y avait trop de catégories et d'items pour la courte période de huit semaines. Il est donc nécessaire soit de racourcir et de modifier le programme, soit d'allonger la période d'enseignement. Parce que mon sujet n'avait que quatre ans, mon choix de méthodes était limité. J'étais obligée d'utiliser des techniques qui ne contenaient pas de lecture ou d'écriture. Plusieurs méthodes ont dû être éliminées à cause de son âge et de ses incapacités imposées par son handicap. Il est aussi important de noter que le sujet est un sujet atypique. Il n'est pas déficient comme la plupart et il est capable de s'exprimer. Ces deux facteurs démontrent que le sujet n'est pas représentatif de tous les enfants autistes. Cette étude a démontré qu'un enfant avec un trouble envahissant du développement peut apprendre certains mots de vocabulaire du français, sa deuxième langue, en employant des téchniques de méthodes behavioristes. Plus de recherche est nécessaire afin de conclure si l'apprentissage d'une langue seconde est possible. Cette recherche peut servir comme outil pour faire d'autres recherches."
