She reports that the shortage of tutors in Virginia requires that she teach herself music and French; gives a detailed description of a long list of popular books she is reading; and comments on Frances Trollope's and Fanny Kemble Butler's observations concerning Americans. Lewis describes Woodlawn in the spring, comments on the popularity of ice skating in the area, and describes watching a solar eclipse through smoked glass
