The coming of the frontier press : how the West was really won by Barbara Lee Cloud ( Book )
3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 403 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In The Coming of the Frontier Press, Barbara Cloud describes how newspaper publishers joined nineteenth-century Americans as they headed west to settle the frontier. Unable to make their fortunes in gold mining, these publishers returned to their first calling, newspapers. Focusing on the period from 1840 to 1890, Cloud argues that these early papers played a crucial role in civilizing the West, bringing spread-out communities together by providing a forum for political discourse and a source for community news, as well as stories from the East. Cloud investigates both the positive and negative influences of the frontier press, from the role of newspapers in railroad expansion to their excessive zeal to make room for settlers who would become their subscribers and their advertisers. Ultimately, few papers survived into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but Cloud rounds out this study with an analysis of those that did endure and a look at how the innovations in content and appearance of western news sheets would affect print media nationwide."--BOOK JACKET

Original intent the battle for America by Anthony Sherin ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Original Intent is the judicial philosophy promoted by President George W. Bush and Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. Originalists believe the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted in the way the Founding Fathers understood it in 1789 -- an era when only white men were allowed to vote and slavery was legal. Others believe the Constitution was crafted in broad, open-ended language and that its meaning evolves over time. Original Intent: The Battle for America argues that the far right is using originalism as a cover to advance a radically conservative political agenda"--Container
The Iraq Study Group report by Iraq Study Group (U.S.) ( )
2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating. There is no path that can guarantee success, hut the prospects can he improved. In this report, we make a number of recommendations for actions to he taken in Iraq, the United States, and the region. Our most important recommendations call for new and enhanced diplomatic and political efforts in Iraq and the region, and a change in the primary mission of U.S. forces in Iraq that will enable the United States to begin to move its combat forces out of Iraq responsibly. VVe believe that these two recommendations are equally important and reinforce one another. If they are effectively implemented, and if the Iraqi government moves forward with national reconciliation, Iraqis will have an opportunity for a better future, terrorism will he dealt a blow, stability will be enhanced in an important part of the world, and America's credibility, interests, and values will be protected. The challenges in Iraq are complex. Violence is increasing in scope and lethality. It is fed by a Sunni Arab insurgency, Shiite militias and death squads, al Qaeda, and widespread criminality. Sectarian conflict is the principal challenge to stability. The Iraqi people have a democratically elected government, yet it is not adequately advancing national reconciliation, providing basic security, or delivering essential services. Pessimism is pervasive. If the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences could be severe. A slide toward chaos could trigger the collapse of Iraq's government and a humanitarian catastrophe. Neighboring countries could intervene. Sunni-Shia clashes could spread. Al Qaeda could win a propaganda victory and expand its base of operations. The global standing of the United States could be diminished. Americans could become more polarized. During the past nine months we have considered a full range of approaches for moving forward. All have flaws. Our recommended course has shortcomings, but

Your neighbor's child a documentary film about Wyoming's juvenile justice system by Wyoming Children's Action Alliance ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Wyoming has no separate juvenile justice system, as most states do, so a juvenile can accumulate a criminal record in adult courts for such minor offenses as smoking in school or skateboarding on a public sidewalk. The film recounts the stories of youth who have been in the system and shows instances of juveniles shackled, over-medicated, and held in treatment facilities over a hundred miles from their families for minor offenses that could have been handled outside the criminal justice system. The film shows Wyoming leaders engaged in a struggle to reform a system that has historically been resistant to change. Filmed in Rawlins, Cheyenne, Laramie, Casper, and other parts of Wyoming, featuring former Senator Alan Simpson and many other people from around Wyoming, and national experts. Not rated."-- Wyoming Children's Action Alliance website

A Process run amok-- can it be fixed? ( Visual )
1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Koppel and panel members discuss the nomination and confirmation process of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Various points are made: Washington is more partisan than it was in the past; the nominee is judged, not on the complete record, but on the basis of one allegation, fault, or peccadillo; liberal groups are out to scandalize a process they cannot dominate; the President ignored the advice of certain key senators; civility is the first casualty of partisanship as truth is the first casualty of war. Why were the Anita Hill allegations not pursued earlier in the process? Is race at the heart of the problem?
