Multigrid methods are good candidates for the resolution of the system arising in Numerical Fluid Dynamics. However, the question is to know if those algorithms which are efficient for the Poisson equation on structured meshes will still apply well to the Euler and NavierStokes equations on unstructured meshes. The study of elliptic problems leads us to define the conditions where a Full Multigridstrategy has O(N) complexity. The aim of this paper is to build a comparison between the elliptic theory and practical CFD problems. First, as an introduction, we will recall some basic definitions and theorems applied to a model problem. The goal of this section is to point out the different properties that we need to produce an FMG algorithm with O(N) complexity. Then, we will show how we can apply this theory to the fluid dynamics equations such as Euler and NavierStokes equations. At last, we present some results which are 2ndorder accurate and some explanations about the behaviour of the FMG process ... The computation of complex turbulent flows by statistical modelling has already a long history. The most popular twoequation models today were introduced in the early sev enties. However these models have been generally tested in rather academic cases. The develope ment of computers has led to more and more acurate numerical methods. The interactions betwe~n numerical and modelling techniques are generally not well mastered. Moreover, computation of real life cases, including 3D effects, complex geometries and pressure gra dients based on twoequation models with lowReynolds treatment at the proximity of walls are not really of common use. A large number of models has been proposed; this is perhaps the sign that none of them is really satisfactory, and then the assessment of their generality is not an easy task: it requires a lot of understanding of the physics and a lot of work for testing the large number of relevant cases in order to assess their limits of validity which is a condition for an improved confidence in engineering applications. This is probably why workshops and working groups are frequent and the ETMA consor tium has choosen to build a state of the art in theoretical and numerical statistical turbu lence modelling for real life computations by taking some marks with respect to previous workshops such as the Stanford meetings (1980,1981); some problems are kept or updated by new experiments, some problems are discarded, some new problems are introduced; the focus is kept on flows with 2D geometries

In order to apply a descent method, we consider the differentiation of the flow solution with respect to the shape. In the continuous case, we formally construct the derivatives (Hadamard variational formula). In the discrete case, we choose an upwind method with flux splitting, and we prove that an exact gradient can be computed using adjoint state. The behavior of a gradient method is studied for a family of nozzle flows."
