" Mangeclous est un vaste roman jovial et gaillard - mais dont la belle humeur est veinée d'humanité et de mélancolie. Comme dans Solal, un des lieux de l'action est l'île grecque de Céphalonie et son curieux ghetto. Les Juifs de Cohen ne sont pas ceux de Zangwill. Ce sont de bienheureux naïfs qui participent à la joie d'un climat lumineux, d'une mer tiède et d'un ciel bienveillant. Dans cette foule grouillante se détache un merveilleux quintette, les Valeureux, tous des Solal, issus de Juifs originaires de Provence mais installés à Céphalonie depuis des générations. Beaux parleurs, brouillons et passionnés, paresseux, menteurs, ingénus, universellement incompétents, naïvement amoureux de la France qui est demeurée leur patrie et dont ils parlent la langue. Dans Solal, les Valeureux ne jouaient qu'un rôle de second plan. Dans Mangeclous, ils ont pris la meilleure place. Ils y folâtrent et s'en donnent à cœur joie. L'écrivain épouse l'âme de sarace en des scènes et des dialogues d'une vérité comique irrésistible. Le famélique Mangeclous, l'homme aux cent métiers, est un faux avocat, toujours en quête de nourritures et de profits. Truculente figure que ce grandiose menteur doué d'une éloquence torrentielle et d'une faim implacable. A Céphalonie il vaque avec passion à des occupations chimériques, sublimes et commerciales, pieds nus mais en chapeau haut-de-forme, toujours toussant - et avec une vigueur qui met à mal les vitres des fenêtres. Mais un jour, un mystérieux cryptogramme arrive à Céphalonie, et Mangeclous s'embarque, accompagné de ses amis. C'est alors que commence une série d'aventures "extravagantes et hilarantes", à Genève entre autres..." (Payot)
