Personal correspondence includes letters from attorneys Charles M. Morris, Edward F. Dwight, and John M. Olin. Also present are 21 letters, 1839-1877, to Wisconsin political leader C. C. Washburn from Matthew H. Carpenter, James R. Doolittle, Henry Dodge, James A. Garfield, B. F. Wade, Charles M. Webb, Philetus Sawyer, Timothy O. Howe, Cyrus Woodman, and Elihu B. Washburne. McConnell's possession of these letters is unexplained.

Correspondence (1835-1880), chiefly with brother, Elihu B. Washburne, describing Washburn's law office in Mineral Point, Civil War service, political events surrounding President Ulysses S. Grant, and his activities as co-founder of Minneapolis Mill Company (later renamed Washburn-Crosby Co., makers of Gold Medal flour) in 1856; and other papers including military records, speeches, biographical materials, publications concerning his will, information on the Memorial Orphan Asylum, Minneapolis, Minn., which he endowed, deeds, estate papers, "Gold Medal" cookbooks and memorabilia, and a thesis relating to his business activities. Includes one letter reflecting the time of his youth in Maine and minor correspondence relating to family affairs.

The letters have information on the Washburn's personal and financial relationships; timberlands and logging in Minnesota and Wisconsin; the waterpower at the Falls of St. Anthony, in which C. C. Washburn, W. D. Washburn, and Dorilus Morrison had an interest; flour milling in Minneapolis; railroad land grants, including that of the Northern Pacific; C. C. Washburn's service in the Civil War; E. B. Washburne's experiences as United States minister in Paris; and state and national politics.

Papers of Cadwallader Colden Washburn, a Wisconsin businessman; Congressman, 1855-1861, 1867-1871; Civil War officer; and governor, 1871-1874; consisting largely of personal letters from various members of his family, especially Elihu B. Washburne, a brother. The correspondence relates to the land and collection agency and law business of the firm of Washburn and Woodman at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, the lead shot manufacturing interests of the firm at Helena, Wisconsin, and the establishment of the Bank of Hallowell, in Maine. Also included are miscellaneous business papers of the Washburn-Crosby Company mills and the genealogical research of Jeannette (Washburn) Kelsey.
