<<Abraxas>> war der erste Höhepunkt in der Geschichte eines jungen Mexikaners, die mit einer Faszination für die amerikanischen Blues-Legenden begann. 1961 reiste Carlos Santana ohne Dokumente in die USA ein. Vom Tellerwäscher avancierte er 1966 als 19-Jähriger zum Kopf der <<Santana Blues Band>>. -- Aber im musikalisch und gesellschaftlich experimentellen Klima im San Francisco der späten 60er Jahre wuchs Santanas Musik rasch über stilistische Grenzen hinaus - nicht zuletzt auch aus der Erkenntnis, dass lateinamerikanische Perkussion die Frauen im Publikum zum wildem Hüftschwung animierte. -- Santanas grosser Durchbruch kam 1969 - noch vor Veröffentlichung ihres Debuts - mit ihrem Auftritt am Woodstock -Festival. Mit <<Abraxas>> im Jahr darauf gelang der Band der perfekte Mix ihrer unorthodoxen Fusion von Rock, Jazz, Salsa, Mambo, Blues und einer Prise Spiritualismus. <<Abraxas>> erreichte Platz 1 in den USA und verkaufte sich über fünf Millionen Mal. -- Eigentlich erstaunlich für ein Album, das zu mehr als der Hälfte aus Instrumental-Nummern bestand, allen voran <<Samba Pa Ti>>. Der Schlüssel dazu ist Carlos Santanas unverwechselbare Gitarren-Handschrift - vom ersten Ton an. Dazu die Hits <<Black Magic Woman>> und <<Oye Como Va>> und eine spannende Balance zwischen Improvisation, Überraschung und klaren Songstrukturen. -- Der Pionier des Latin Rock kann auch heute, 37 Jahre später - mit 60 - stolz auf seine frühe Meisterleistung sein!
