Astrophysics in the extreme ultraviolet : proceedings of colloquium no. 152 of the International Astronomical Union, held in Berkeley, California, March 27-30, 1995 by International Astronomical Union( Book )

17 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and French and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the beginning of Space Astronomy, the Extreme Ultraviolet band of the spectrum (roughly defined as the decade in energy from 90-900 Å) was deemed to be the `unobservable ultraviolet'. Pioneering results from an EUV telescope on the Apollo-Soyuz Mission in 1975 forcibly demonstrated that this view was incorrect; but it required the all-sky surveys of the English Wide-Field Camera and the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer to demonstrate the broad potential of this field. Over 700 EUV sources have now been detected. Over 150 researchers from 16 countries gathered to share results in this new field at the International Astronomical Union Colloquium No. 152. Papers were presented on a wide variety of topics including cool star coronae, white dwarf atmospheres and evolution, neutron stars, the Io torus, cataclysmic variable stars, active galactic nuclei, the interstellar medium, winds and atmospheres of early type stars, and EUV plasma diagnostics. Selected manuscripts from this meeting are provided in these Conference Proceedings
Extreme ultraviolet astronomy : a selection of papers presented at the First Berkeley Colloquium on Extreme Ultraviolet Astronomy, University of California, Berkeley, January 19-20, 1989 by Berkeley Colloquium on Extreme Ultraviolet Astronomy( Book )

8 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The field of extreme ultraviolet astronomy will see two major satellite observatories to be launched in 1991, one by ESA (ROSAT mission), one by NASA (EUVE mission). These Proceedings discuss the potential for EUV Astronomy, results from recent missions, approved and possible future missions and new developments in EUV technology

Plasmaspheric Helium Ion Distribution from Satellite Observations of HeII 304 A( Book )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

High sensitivity and spatial resolution observations of the He(2)II-304 A emission line intensity in the earth's nightglow have been carried out by the extreme ultraviolet telescope on the Apollo-Soyuz mission in July 1975. The data, obtained over a wide range of parameters, are compared with the predictions of a kinetic equilibrium model of plasmaspheric ion density. Excellent overall agreement observation and theory is found using as inputs a temperature model, solar flux, and H+ and O+ number densities determined by extrapolating nearly simultaneous Atmospheric Explorer C measurements at 300 km. The observations in the northern hemisphere are well fit by a model having 285 He+ ions cm-3 at 500 km independent of latitude or longitude while those in the south require 430 He+ ions cm -3 at the same altitude. This result is consistent with available information on the interhemispheric asymmetry of He+ observed by a mass spectrometer on Explorer 32 and on the winter neutral helium bulge. (Author)

Satellite Observations of Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The first Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) spectrometer (ECOM-721) was flown on the DOD satellite P78-1. The instrument collected a large amount of high quality data on the Earth's atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere. It is still the only such experiment performed from a satellite. Because the instrument was on a spinning satellite, in a noon-midnight polar orbit at 600km altitude, it obtained a huge amount of unique data of geophysical interest. A substantial number of important geophysical observations were made, including the first spectrum of the polar cusp under sunlight, the first spectrum of the EUV nightglow emissions, the first spectrum of the tropical airglow in the EUV, the first spectrum of the nightside aurora below 800A, the detection of dielectronic recombination emissions in the atmosphere, and the first spectrum of the polar cap emissions in the EUV
