The radical journalist and poet Edwin Rolfe wrote eloquently of subjects ranging from the hardships of the Great Depression and the experience of war to the witch-hunts of the McCarthy era. More than fifty of Rolfe's best poems - some beautifully lyrical and some devastatingly satiric - are included in Trees Became Torches, a book designed to reach a broader audience than the recently published Collected Poems. Rolfe was widely known as the poet laureate of the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, the Americans who volunteered to help defend the elected Spanish government during the 1936-39 civil war.

The collection consists of about 250 black and white prints and about 215 negatives. 200 of the negatives have matching prints; some match more than one print. The images in this collection were accrued by Rolfe in the course of his work as a journalist in Spain. Over half are individual and group portraits. The collection contains images of British author and assistant commissar of the Fifteenth International Brigade Ralph Bates and African-American author Langston Hughes, as well as photographs of barricades, bombed/shelled buildings, medical personnel and street scenes.

The collection includes literary manuscripts, correspondence, personal papers, books, periodicals, artifacts, and ephemera. Over 90% of extant Hemingway literary manuscripts are contained in this collection. Correspondence includes letters to and from family members, friends, and business associates (largely publishers, lawyers, and agents). Correspondents include many important mid-twentieth century writers and intellectuals. Many of the books and periodicals include Hemingway's own annotations. The Hemingway Collection also contains over 10,000 photographs of Hemingway, his family and friends, as well as various subjects of interest to Hemingway: Paris, Spain, Key West, bullfighting, hunting, Cuba, and Fishing. Artifacts include personal possesions and art objects, among these a number of paintings.
