Consists almost exclusively of correspondence received by the Oberlin College Treasurer, including a few letters predating the founding of Oberlin College (1833) which relate mainly to the activities of co- founder John J. Shipherd. Because the Treasurer also acted as the institution's secretary during this period, the letters deal with a wide variety of subjects, including the founding and organization of Oberlin College, efforts to secure financing, inquiries regarding admissions, queries from and about students, and other routine administrative topics. Subjects of wider interest include opposition to slavery, aid for Negroes, coeducation, temperance activity, and religious and educational work
