The collection primarily contains legal documents and legal correspondence from Morris' practice. These materials include: letters from potential clients (usually either a request for representation or a presentation of a potential case), letters and memoranda from the court, marriage certificates, wills, leases, contracts, emancipation papers, an autopsy report (1872), rental agreements, navy discharge papers, deeds, receipts, bank stubs, court testimonies and court documents. Several legal issues are also referenced in the collection: a contestation of Carter H. Edloe's will which would have awarded his slave, Harriet, $8,000 upon his death (1847), the liberation and legal matters pertaining to Liberia, a case regarding the journal, "Panorama, or Mirror of Slavery" (1851), pay inequities for African-American soldiers, slavery, B.C. Gregory versus the Union Club of Boston, Reverend Samuel Ringgold Ward's newspaper, "The Impartial Citizen," and signed petitions requesting a separate African-American militia called the Massasoit Guards. Other items in the collection include: letters regarding Morris' son's graduation from the Imperial College in France, the Freemen's National Memorial Monument Association, the by-laws and regulations of the African Humane Society (1820) with list of members, the Committee on the Militia, a manuscript song "Hang Out the Flag" (Elijah W. Smith, 1863?), and a schedule for the African Grand Lodge Archives (1866)
