Mourir d'aimer by André Cayatte( Visual )

1 edition published in 1971 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Based on a notorious French court case know as the Gabrielle Russier case, this film centres on the consequences of a love affair between a schoolteacher in her thirties and her teenage student. The public scandal that ensues when the boy's parents bring charges against the teacher ruins the lives of both lovers. Ridiculed and harassed, the teacher is driven to suicide. Director Cayatte, who was a longtime opponent of the antiquated French legal system, portrays the lovers in a sympathetic light and their accusers as villainous upholders of bourgeois morality. The film's success bestowed fame upon Annie Girardot, who played the tragic teacher and went on to become one of the most popular female stars in France during the 1970s
