Grande figure de la sculpture franţcaise du XIXe siècle, aussi célèbre en son temps que Carpeaux ou Rodin, Jules Dalou (1838-1902), auteur du fameux Triomphe de la République qui trüne aujourd'hui place de la Nation, exécuta de nombreux monuments publics parisiens dont cet ouvrage invite à découvrir la puissante originalité. Après une enfance parisienne modeste, Dalott entame sa carrière sous le Second Empire. Elle est vite interrompue par la guerre de 1870 et la Commune de Paris à laquelle cet artiste engagé prend part. Contraint à l'exil, Dalou s'installe à Londres où il obtient un vif succès. Rentré en France en 1879, il reţcoit la commande par la Ville de Paris de son oeuvre la plus célèbre, ce Triomphe de la République à l'esthétique si révolutionnaire. En marge d'une importante production de monuments publics, il conţcut, comme tous les sculpteurs de son temps, de nombreux bustes et oeuvres décoratives très appréciées, formant un immense corpus jamais étudié de manière exhaustive. Attendu des spécialistes comme des collectionneurs, cc catalogue présente pour la première fois l'intégralité du fonds exceptionnel des 360 sculptures de Jules Melon conservées au musée du l'etit Palais depuis leur acquisition par la Ville de Paris en 1905. Enrichi d'une abondante documentation inédite, ainsi que de nombreux dessins et photographies anciennes, cet ouvrage, illustré de plus de 900 reproductions, nous dévoile les secrets d'atelier de cet artiste d'exception."--str.
