Le Christ fin de siècle by Yasuko Eshima( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The romantic figure of Christ, bound up with the ideology of spontaneity and progress, offered a unity of myth to the search for the justice (Michelet), for the interior life, the purified religion "in spirit and in truth" (Renan), for an ideal, at once social and spiritual (Sand) or for the resorption of the evil (Hugo). Whereas, in the second half of the 19th century formed a reflexion on the significance of the individual being's unicity and on all that exalts it. The Christ of the decadence is conceived not only as spirit, but also as body and blood, as shown in the case of E. Hello who recognized the ardent need to attain Christ by close proximity, contact and "touch". L. Bloy also lays stress upon the presence of the body; this presence of flech for expressing spirituality is deeply "dedadent", and a constant reversibility of one and another is perceived by him. With the phenomena of syntaxical and lexical crumbling, characteristic of the "fin de siècle", square Christ's cruched images: images of his divided body which suffers in each of its members, as one of Huysmans in là-bas or in St. Lydwine of Schiedam. Through the poetry of sensation, this "exterior life" involved in the ambiguity of inside/outside, Verlaine was conducted toward the encounter with Christ of which the fleshly presence was important for his spirituality of conversion. Then, the decadent figure of Christ is bound up with a spiritual atmosphere, at once presence and diffuse, an interior climate and a light of art
