A useful dream : African photography, 1960-2010 by Simon Njami( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Photography has proved a particularly essential art in the African continent's postcolonial era, both for recording the numerous seismic moments in its recent history, and for reclaiming the imagery of Africa from its colonial portrayers. As Africa has begun to step beyond its colonial subjugation, photography has also assumed a leading role in providing African countries with individual identities. Tracking the blossoming of postcolonial photography in Africa from 1960 to the present, and accompanying an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, A Useful Dream: African Photography 1960-2010 celebrates 50 years of African photography. Among the 34 photographers gathered in its pages are Rui Assubuji, Nabil Boutros, Loulou Cherinet, James Depara, Samuel Fosso, David Goldblatt, Bob Gosani, Pierrot Men, Zwelethu Mtethwa, Eileen Perrier, Ricardo Rangel, Malick Sidibe and Patrice-Felix Tchikaya. The volume includes an introduction by Simon Njami and a text by Frank Vanhaecke."--Amazon

6 editions published in 2005 in French and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nicola Lo Calzo : Obia by Nicola Lo Calzo( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and French and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Obia' is originally an Akan word, specifically attributed to the Fanti. It points to a belief system developed by Maroon peoples since their arrival from West Africa. The Obia photographic project – undertaken in the historical Maroon territories of Saamaka-Land and Maroni-Land, in both Suriname and French Guiana – seeks to interrogate the links between the exceptional magical-religious legacy of Maroon people and the new challenges that stem from modernity: intergenerational conflict, loss of references, unemployment and rural migration. This book is part of Lo Calzo’s long-term photographic project Cham about the living memories of colonial slavery and anti-slavery struggles. 0Exhibition: Memorial to abolition of slavery, Nantes, France (10.05. - 30.09.2015) / Galery Dominique Fiat, Paris, France (20.05. - 20.06.2015)
