26 editions published between 1923 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 729 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
More than 900 problems and answers explore applications of differential equations to vibrations, electrical engineering, mechanics, and physics. New rootlocation theorems for partitioned matrices by
J. L Brenner(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In solving systems of linear equations by iteration methods, an advance guarantee is sometimes needed that the iteration will converge. Such a guarantee is available from one or another of the class of theorems known as rootlocation theorems, or Gersgorintype theorems. In an unpublished report, the author had given methods for discovering such theorems, and for finding counterexamples to unfounded conjectures. In the present paper, several new rootlocation theorems are given

Footnote to a paper of Roy, Greenberg and Sarhan by
J. L Brenner(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Roy, Greenberg, n Sarhan evaluate determinants, characteristic polynomials, and roots of certain matrices by ad hoc methods. Several of the matrices these authors consider are related, and can be solved by a single method. The ideas needed are elementary enough so that a brief sketch gives all the necessary material. The elementary method of attack yields a little more than the ad hoc methods; with it, the proper vectors can also be written down at sight. (Author)

The equatorial orbit of a nearearth satellite(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The orbit of a nearearth satellite is described by finite equations x equals x(t), y equals y(t), z equals z(t) which closely approximate the position of the satellite. Various sets of approximate equations were proposed by various authors but in no case has it been possible to establish rigorous error bounds for these solutions. This is true even when the only noninversesquare force is due to the oblateness of the earth. Realistic and strict numerical error bounds for an approximate solution are given. Special though this case is, a complete error analysis may have some interest. (Author)

Mahler matrices and the equation qa = aqm(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Several sets of matrices are defined; each set forms an abelian group. The elements of the matrices are 0, 1, 1 and other roots of unity (or sums of roots of unity). The determinant, characteristic roots, vectors, and elementary divisors are also found. Thus the matrices form a convenient set of test matrices for a routine which purports to solve a matrix. A typical test matrix may involve nonreal elements; if each element of the matrix is replaced by a 2 by 2 matrix in the usual way the roots of the expanded real matrix are the roots of the test matrix and their conjugates. The vectors of the expanded matrix are easily found also. (Author)

A set of matrices for testing computer programs(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1962 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A set of matrices is defined, and the complete solution of each matrix is given. The matrices have arbitrary dimension, and a large nuber of parameters. By adjusting these parameters, a matrix of arbitrary dimension can be constructed which has two eigenvectos tht are nearly coincident, which is derogatory (has fewer than the maximum possible number of eigenvectors), or is s nearly singular as desired. Thus a set of matrices is available which forms a convenient set of check matrices for testing computer programs which purport to solve or invert a matrix. The matrices of the set have certain properties of regularity. For selected values of the parameters, the matrices appear as variancecovariance matices in statistics. In particular cases, the eigenvalues (but not the eigenvectors) and the determinants were found. (Autho)
