"The Evolution of Washington, DC is a striking volume featuring select pieces of the extraordinary collection of Washingtoniana donated by Albert H. Small to the George Washington University in 2011. It showcases treasures such as an 1860 lithograph of the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson in front of the White House and a contemporary print of old Potomac River steamboats. Other unique pieces include early designs for the White House, the Capitol, and the Washington Monument as well as presidential portraits and Civil War memorabilia. Each object--from architectural plans and topographical maps to letters and advertisements--tells a fascinating story, and together they illustrate the history of our nation's capital and indeed our nation itself"

Capital houses : historic residences of Washington DC and its environs, 1735-1965 by James M Goode( Book )

4 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Washington?s history of domestic architecture offers a remarkable range of periods, styles, and types yet, unlike the city?s great monuments and civic buildings, its documentation and in-depth studies have been scarce. Architectural and social historian James M. Goode and award-winning photographer Bruce White fill that void with their magnificent study of Washington?s historic residences that will come as a revelation even to those who think they know the city. Capital Houses examines the history of Washington?s domestic architecture over a period of nearly 250 years through an outstanding collection of 56 historic houses: 44 in the District of Columbia and 12 in its Virginia and Maryland suburbs. In ten meticulously detailed chapters, each dedicated to a specific architectural period, Goode traces their stylistic development, from the first Georgian example?Mount Vernon (1735) in Fairfax County, Virginia?to one of the city?s best midcentury Moderns, the Kreeger House (1966) on Foxhall Road in Washington. A number of houses, including the Georgian landmark Hayes Manor, the Stickley-designed Dumblane, the Arts and Crafts-style Granger Cottage, and an Art Deco gem, the Mounsey House, are published here for the first time. A detailed introduction outlines important historical influences and trends and offers insightful political, social, and artistic commentary

Frederick Hart: sculptor by Frederick Hart( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Text and picture portfolios focus on Hart's major public sculptures: the monumental Creation works at the main entrance to Washington National Cathedral and the larger-than-life-size bronze Three Soldiers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, both in the nation's capital. The portfolios show the development of these two important national monuments. Hart's cathedral work reflects a contemporary theological perspective which envisions Creation as not just a singular act but a state of constant becoming. His Vietnam Veterans Memorial statue fulfills the public's need for the reflection of the human face in our monuments in order to give human perspective and meaning to our history

This research was published in Goode's Best Addresses: A Century of Washington's Distinguished Apartment Houses (Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1988). The book was republished in 2003 with additions
